Rear diff dogboneish mount - worth replacing?

Post by free5ty1e »

So, when the tranny mount was installed recently, the mechanic showed me that this rear diff mount is shot.

He used a crowbar to move the diff up and down in the mount and it seemed looser than it ought to be (having no experience with this mount, I should know lol).

He then went to tell me it would probably take many hours of labor to get all the old rusty components out of the way to change this mount (axles? Entire driveline? Whats required?).... I started to think this may not be worth changing.

Thoughts? The tranny shifts SO much better now that the 5mt mount is fresh and holding the shifter linkage in place for me.

Would I notice much of a difference if I were to bite the bullet and replace the diff mount? Not worth it until its time to put in a 6mt?

There's a company that sells poly bushings for that bracket. I made a thread about it after a lot of research it was the only company I could find that makes them.

Unless you hear clunking, I wouldn't bother personally. The drive line and axles aren't being hurt by a little play there. Especially if you've gotta pay someone to do it.

Its 4 bolts a a bit of prying, easy to do, I filled mine with windshield urethane and let it cure for a few days since I had a spare.

DevC, looking at the stock piece in the link kimo posted, im not seeing where you would put the window goop. Can you expound a bit on what you did? I already have the 3m windo-weld to do the tranny mount.

You would just remove the bushings and fill with window weld around the hollow bolt pins.

I wouldn't feel comfortable removing the whole rubber bushing and hoping to get the metal back in the right spot. If anything you could remove some of the rubber with the hacksaw method and fill the remaining area with window weld.

The stock rear diff bushing has some play in it. I too wouldn't worry about it unless you have clunking or notice very excessive play. I'm running the same bushings Kimo is. Here are pics from my install.

No, don't remove any material. There are large gaps to fill in already.

I tried that with my trans mount when I was FWD and never could get the urethane to dry. So it really didn't do anything but make a big mess.

I've heard that it doesn't last. At least not for motor mounts.

Possibly, its not something you would want to do to repair broken or torn mounts.
