Transmission swap question.

Post by TurboGeneration »

I have a 94 legacy Turbo. I have 2nd and 3rd gear syncho's replaced and they went bad again...also down shifting is a pain. So...I did a transmission flush and ran Synthetic trans fluid. Still a problem...I'm tired of fighting this. I am going to go pick up a new transmission.
Which Subaru manual transmissions line up and are easily swapped on these 94's?

Any transmission that was bolted to an EJ series engine will work, up through the mid/late 00s (when they went away from using a speedo cable).

02-05 Wrx is the closest match, you can reuse almost all your setup. You'd need the rear diff and rear axles tho.

You can avoid the rear diff swap on a wrx transmission by swapping out your ss transfer and extension housing. The wrx uses a 1.1:1 transfer gear which is why they have a 3.9 front and 3.54 rear. by, and using the ss 1:1 transfer gears you eliminate this problem.
