Rear diff

Post by 10wrxing »

Hey guys
Have a 91 Legacy awd auto.

I just replaced the front left (drivers) axle as everyone told me the cv joint was what was making the marbles rolling around sound when turning right.

It still is doing this sound, although it doesn't seem as bad as it was.
I can't really tell where the sound is coming from, but now suspecting the rear left axle.
I just jacked the rear end up, and tried turning the left rear wheel, and noticed the right rear wheel isn't always turning.

Any ideas what this would be?
This is just a winter car for me, but I don't want to be damaging anything, or getting stranded somewhere.

Thanks!

The rear diff in the 91 non-turbo cars is open and so if you spin left wheel the right one may not turn with the same speed or direction for that matter.

Thanks Josh.
I know it's a open diff, but I thought it would spin the opposite direction at the same speed.
But, I'm spinning it and it's not turning at all sometimes.

Side note, I took it to a bit if a hill that is more mud than anything else. I see a atv tried to go up and got stuck. So I tried it and even stopped part way up, went up with no issues.

But I still don't know what this noise it's making is.

Is the rear driveline spinning when you turn the one wheel? If it is, the other wheel will not likely spin.

You might try having someone else in the car with you and sit in the other seats to see if they can determine the area the sound is coming from.

Do you mean the driveshaft when you say driveline?
I don't think it was moving.

I may have to get my wife to help, but she's already not happy with me having this car (have 3 others already), and the last thing she'll want to hear is something is wrong with it.

Thanks for the help so far!

As this is the 3rd (only used one though), I'm not sure she'll buy that.
