Ideas for stronger axles?

So this keeps happening

Its a RWD swapped SS running a welded WRX rear end and WRX axles.

What do people run for stronger axles? I know STi stuff is a little stronger, but, im not sure those will hold up either...

I think bmxkelowna eventually went r180 axles and diff. Why not skip a whole size and go r200 from a skyline or z32 300zx? You know those will hold up. Main benefit of the r180 setup is no major modification I suppose, just a matter of swapping the right hubs and brakes to support it.

Nope, lugs and rotor were still bolted to the wheel. The wheel bearing also shattered. Were thinking a 300zx rear diff and axles are a good idea. You can get the hubs machined out to accept 300zx things fairly easily.

Also, mike, from what I've been reading you can swap an R180 directly into a leggy with the use of Legacy GT-B axles. Apparently they have R180 inner and R160 outer CV's straight from the factory. This car might become mine soon, and if so, that swap will happen.

Unless something changed, those were basically unobtanium. Plus... You're taking about keeping the weaker hubs.

I would think the bearing housings in the uprights are trashed/out of round after something like that, which is only going to accelerate bearing wear and possibly cause it to happen more often.

I'd probably start by trying to find a new set of uprights and see if it lasts longer.

R180 swap requires new uprights also plus different brakes, and the axles are a little too long so you'd want wider lateral links too. Plus it is an actual LSD and you wouldn't have the high stresses of a welded diff.

The DSS upgrade kit for an R160 with upgrade hubs that drop into the stock uprights is A LOT:

Is there a specific year GT-B that has those axles, or was it a specific option? They aren't that uncommon.

Oh, you mean the LGT Spec B. I thought you were talking about the BD/BK Legacy GT-B.

If I got the part numbers right, the GT-B axles are $350/each through subaru genuine parts. Maybe you could get them a bit cheaper through carparts.com.

I came up with 28421AG03A and 28421AG03B. Subarugenuineparts.com calls them driveshafts, though I verified those #'s are in fact axles for a 6mt Legacy 2.5GT. You should verify before buying part#'s based on what "some guy on the internet" said ;).

I still think keeping the weaker r160 hubs (and hence, bearings) is a bad idea though.

Looks like $70/ea at oreilly's!

We'll see how it all turns out. Nothing is happening soon, since we're broke and all...

That's cheap enough that I might swap a 4.44 r180 diffy that originally came with my STI RA 5mt tranny! But you know those axles won't last. :( CCR Rebuilders out of Colorado do a really good job, so I've heard.
