5 speed swap

Post by zeke »

So I ditched my auto for a 5 speed out of a 93 ss. I have the entire car and pulled the engine and transmission out of it last night and all the linkage. My question is with the ecu, I cannot seem to find a clear answer on what to do if i need to swap them remove my tcm or anything else.

Hi,
I'd suggest you search the Sticky in this Drivetrain category, as it's all listed there or elsewhere on here. Legacy777's swap thread will also give you other details you may be missing.

Short answer: ECU is the SAME for both 5-speed and Auto SS models, and the TCM / TCU is not needed.

Yeah I read that they were the same and that a wire needed to be cut? Wasn't sure if the abs on my car would be affected at all and if my cruise will work still. I'll try and keep searching for info I've looked through Josh's write up but can't seem to find the exact answer I need.

ABS= OK
Cruise = NOT OK. The 5-speed uses a different computer (mounted behind the pass. side foot well - by the door). BUT my car was '90 so may be different than the newer models and / or SS/TW's.

Yeah looks like ill have to check there. The auto is a 91 ss and my donor is a 93 ss. Does anyone know what wire on the harness that I need to tap into for the reverse lights?

As for your cruise question: you have to use a cruise computer for the same year and transmission. If you get a n/a computer it will not allow your car to see boost while in cruise control (ask me how I know)
So you will need to source a cruise computer from a 91 manual SS

No you can't have one

^HI,
The '93 SS CRUISE computer may not work. (The ECU will be fine.)

If 'dscoobydoo' could clarify: (ask me how I know)

My experience.
My original NA cruise control worked on my '90 when did my turbo swap - both w/the SS EJ22T ECU and w/the Rob-Tuned EJ20G ECU.

When I did my 5-speed swap I installed a cruise computer from another NA Legacy (not sure on the year) that had a 5-speed.

Dan,

I never changed my cruise computer from the 90 MT non-turbo cruise computer and I can boost freely while using cruise. However, the 90 cruise computer may not be suited for boosted operation and that may explain the issues in the following post.

5 speed swap

Post by dscoobydoo »

My white 93 SS surges while in cruise control but I do see up to 12lbs boost. The maroon SS is a auto to manual swap and the cruise computer is a NA one and it NEVER goes above 0 when on cruise. BUT it does not surge either.
The turbo cars have a different part number for the cruise computer than the NA cars do. I figured it had to do with changes while under boost. And thus I thought the NA computer would not allow boost under
cruise. I definitely could be wrong. But i would love to know what the difference is then ........

I haven't tried my cruise since getting it tuned, so I need to do some testing to see if it still surges.

Do you know if the SS cruise computer is different between the auto & manual trans cars?

I think I remember that the part numbers are different. When I got the maroon car unfinished (and was fixing it) cruise did not work and it had the original computer. I swapped it with a 93 na one and it started working. But it would not boost in cruise mode. Did my research and the part numbers for na and turbo are different. I was betting that cruise worked before the swap but I can't be certain. One of these days I will pull the one from the white car and try it on the maroon one.
