Auto to Manual First gen compaired to 95 Legacy

Post by Nohbdy »

So I was wondering if it was possible to run a first gen trans in a 95 Legacy wagon. Now I did do some searching on here and it seems the drive shaft would be different but other then that what would be other differences? Also does anyone know what might be different in a first gen AT to 5MT vs a 95 AT to 5MT?

You can run basically any 5mt in the car that you want. To use a 1st gen trans you'll need to get a 95-98 5mt speed sensor, and use a 95-99 5mt legacy driveshaft (outback driveshaft won't work unless you change the carrier bearing). The 95 does have a different ecu pinout than any other year so you'll need to look that up for your specific year.

Hi,
Also, the rear pinion flange (on the front of the rear differential) bolt pattern was changed on the '95+ models. You 'should' be able to mix/match the front half of the driveline w/the rear half.

And this is probably 'old news' but the transmission's ratio must match the rear diff's Final Drive Ratio.
