Larger Wheel and Tire Fitment thread

Post by jamal »

Here is a thread for posting the different/larger wheel and tire combinations you've had and how they fit. Things like wheel size, offset, camber, and suspension modifications are all generally relevant and should be included. So I'll start:

Car: 1993 L AWD

Combo 1 - WRX wheels and tires
Wheel size: 16x6.5
Offset: +55
Tire: 205/55-16 Bridgestone RE-92
Suspension: Stock
Rubbing: None, but it was really close to the rear spring perches.
_____

Combo 2 - WRX wheels
Same as above, but with 04 sti suspension. Until I added negative camber with some aftermarket bolts, the tires rubbed slightly on the rear fenders.
_____

Combo 3 - 00-01 2.5RS wheels
Wheel Size: 16x7
Offset: +53
Tire: 225/50-16 Bridgestone RE750
Suspension: stock 04 sti
Alignment: about 1.5 degrees negative camber all around
Rubbing: YES. On hard cornering the tires would rub on the rear fenders. It was mostly on the tab where the bolt is to connect the rear bumper to the quarter panel. A small amount of "rolling" with a prybar took care of it.
_____

Combo 4 - RS wheels
I put some new tires on the RS wheels. Same size, but Falken ZE-912s which were slightly narrower than the RE750s so there's more room.

I also noticed that a lot of compression in a sharp turn would cause the fronts to catch the front fenders. There isn't much room on the inside either. Rear tires are very close to the struts, and there are some slight rub marks on the fender liners from the front inside of the tire.
_____

A few weeks ago I rolled the crap out of all four fenders with an actual fender roller. With a little less offset I expect to be able to fit 235s easily.

Wheel Size: 17x7
Offset: +48
Tire: Bridgestone Potenza RE-070 225/45

Unfortunately this is mostly data for sports tires with sports suspension. I've just got some 215/60R16 snow tires on steel wheels from a Subaru Forester that I'd like to use this winter on my stock suspension. Anyone know if this will work? Well, I'll let you know what happens either way.

That's about 8% taller than the standard size. I suspect the tires will scrape the bottom of the spring perches. Can anyone offer any insight?

Found a good site: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

The new tires are 1 inch larger in radius, so I should be able to measure vertical clearance. They're 30mm (1 & 3/16ths an inch) wider, so they might be quite prone to rub, I'll have to try them on soon, it's about time now.

Alright, keep us posted. I'm also thinking of running 205/70-15 winter tires on my stock height Legacy Turbo. I suspect I'll have to roll the fenders a bit.

That's only a tenth of an inch bigger in diameter, so the fitment comparison of our tires in that dimension is so close that they could be the same if your tires were worn a bit.

It's looking good (though close!), but I have to road test (see below).

Wheels: Steel from a Forester (stock wheels are steel)
Wheel size: 16x6.5
Offset: +55 (I think, there was "EJ55" stamped on the wheel after the rim size)
Tire: 215/60R16 Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 (stock tires are the stock 185/70 R14 size)
Wheel/Tire Assembly Weight: 41.0 lbs (stock size rubber on steel was 35.5 lbs)
Suspension: Stock
Alignment: Stock
Rubbing: There's about 3 mm between the tire and rear spring perch on the strut, if the tires weren't worn I think it would rub just a hair. On the inside of the front there's no more than 2mm between the tire sidewall and strut.

Road Test: Tire pressure set to 32 psi all around (I run 35 psi all around in my stock tires). There was only rubbing on the front of the front-left wheel-well liner, which I think can be corrected. I didn't notice any other rubbing even in cornering. The car feels like an SUV now, but still handles well. Bumps are much more pronounced, but are not harsh and rather bouncy. Braking takes much more force, this bothered me, but was expected. Nothing off on the highway, except the speedometer..

EDIT: I'm pretty sure this is the max size that will fit on a stock first generation legacy, check out the clearance pictures:

Rear clearance; this is such a close shot it's hard to tell that the gap is only 3mm:
Image
Front clearance; the gap is no more than 2mm:
Image

UGLY:
Image

--But effective; one full inch more ground clearance:

This is good info. Everyone be sure to list the car since there are differences between FWD and AWD, suspension components and whatnot.

I'm hopefully picking up a set of WRX wheels 16x6.5 soon for my AWD wagon and want to make sure I get tires that won't rub. The X factor on this car is that it was formally pneumatic susp, so the conversion kit may have different perches than stock. I'll investigate.... might go with 205/50's just to be safe in that regard, would hate to waste the loot on buying tires, paying mounting/balance etc and then have to get rid of them
