Need help, decision to make in middle of repair

Post by 2.2TLegacy »

Changing out my front rotors and pads this morning because I was having some squealing issues. Found that my left front caliper one of the pistons is partially stuck. It released the pressure to get the new pads on but it didn't do it very easily compared to the right side caliper.

My question is, can I fix this? I have never done a caliper rebuild before. Or should I just buy a new caliper (do I have to replace both or just the one I am having issues with?).

Need to make the decision quick so i can get the necessary parts before its too late

You can buy a rebuild kit, and while it's not extremely difficult it can be kind of a pain to get the dust seals back in properly. You'll likely have to get this rebuild kit from the dealer. If you want to replace the caliper, you can replace just that caliper.

How "stuck" was the piston? Did you try pushing them back in by hand or a c-clamp?

If your time crunched like me, I would just buy caliper,if I recall it was 65$-70$ for rebuilt two pot with bracket.

Rebuilding is never as quick as you think it will be. Especially if you want to the best job you can do. And all auto stores have rebuilt calipers like rallyak is saying.

Ended up buying both front calipers for $52 each. Figured it was easier, especially after i pulled apart mine and a torrent of rusty brake fluid poured out. Just not worth trying to fix that.

Josh, the caliper put up a fight using a c-clamp so definitely not in good shape.
