1991 Legacy Wagon w/ or w/o ABS?

Post by scoobydrew »

I'm looking for a proportioning valve that comes with a Subaru equipped with a no ABS but 4 wheel discs.

There is a 1991 Legacy wagon at my local junkyard with 4 wheel discs, but I cannot figure out if it has ABS (or if someone has already claimed the ABS controller/pump). I took a look at it, and I cannot find the ABS pump. The brake proportioning valve is black and about 5 inches long.

According to Cars101.com, 1991 Legacies came with 4 wheel discs and ABS.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Welcome to the BBS.

This is what the non-abs proportioning valve looks like:

You can also look at the brake master cylinder if it's still there. If there are only 2 lines coming from the MC, the car had ABS. If there are four lines coming from the MC then the car did not have ABS. Also, the non-ABS MC has a 1" bore, while the ABS MC has a 1-1/16" bore.

Here are pics of the ABS 1-1/16" bore MC.

Look on the frame rail immediately behind the passenger headlight in this pic:

Even if someone removed the ABS pump, there would be evidence of it, such as the 4 brake lines going to where it was. Also, on the passenger strut tower you can see that my example has a different proportioning valve from those Legacy777 posted, for your reference.

If you need a proportioning valve, I have one. It's a non ABS valve from my 1991 wagon I had back in 2008. Make me an offer...

I have to agree with Mike even with the pump gone its quick to notice. My 91 didn't have ABS and the ones that did or do I almost always see stickers somewhere on the car that mention if it has ABS.
