Double checking WRX brake upgrade parts

Post by Burnera »

Ok, i have a 93 Legacy L wagon.

Front brakes:
true or false....02 WRX calipers, brake pads, and rotors are straight bolt in.

Rear brakes:
more complicated. Lets say i have 02 WRX rear calipers, and i can get rear knuckles from another subaru, what knuckles can mount 02 WRX rear calipers and also be bolted to my car?

Is there a guide on rear knuckle swaps? Really it's just the spline on the drive shaft that changes right?

Right now in town i've got a 99 Outback and a 98 Forester i can pilfer for parts, and there's also 95-97 Imprezas, 90-01 Legacies

All Impreza, forester, legacy, outback, wrx, sti front brakes bolt on, through at least 2007. STI calipers from 04-07 will work but you need 2004 sti rotors to match your 5x100 wheel lug pattern.

For the rears, almost everything above directly bolts on. The exceptions include STI and 2006-2007 WRX. Those 02 rear wrx calipers and rotors are the same size as your wagon ones. So, no upgrade there.

If you had a car with rear drums, easiest way to convert is to use hubs off a 90-99 Legacy. If you have ABS, grab ones from a car with abs. If not, either abs or non-abs hubs will work. The parking brake lines are different lengths between drum and disc. Also IIRC I had to grab the soft brake lines from a rear-disc brake car when I swapped.

Check the "sticky" thread at the top of the brake section for more info.

The brakes are a priority right now, as mine are obviously way past due.
What other models shared the same caliper as found on a 02-07 WRX?
I've read the stickies, and either the info is not listed or i just didn't get it.
(i actually don't want the 4pots, too expensive/excessive for my goals)

Open up the "Compiled Brake Information" link in the sticky, and look to see which other cars use the same size rotor as WRX.

Lower down in the same link shows what brake pads fit which cars.

You should really focus on 2003-2005 WRX front brakes, and the cars from the list that use the same size rotors and pads. 2002 WRX had smaller brake pads compared to 03-05, and of course 06-07 wrx used 4-piston fronts.
