Wheel truing concerns

Post by burnt_toast »

So when I bought my Legacy it came with 3 Toyo's, pretty equal wear. And some off brand oddball tire on the front right. Since this is a no go for Subaru AWD and I'd like to save my diffs, I decided to "fix" the problem, via the following:

Bought a matching NEW Toyo tire, ended up 3/32 more tread than the front left, 1 over the limit of 2/32
So I took it to a place that Trues and Balances tires, while still on the car. They shaved it down to within 1/32, and balanced it, on the vehicle.

I watched on the side, the process to do this was to lift the front of car, front axle end up in the air. Then spin just that new front right tire as cutting machine took off layers of tread. Noted both wheels spinning as this was done. Didn't observe on-car balancing but imagine it was similar process, but with balance machine.

My concern is, would spinning just the front axle while rear is stationary cause any damage?? I recall in owners manual you aren't supposed to tow with just front on the ground, this seems like a similar situation.

Irony is I was trying to do all of this to SAVE the diffs, I hope I haven't caused them more damage instead... :/

Would this be for a MT or AT?

For an auto it's fine as there is not the same direct connection between the front and rear wheels.
