The stock exhaust hanger bracket is facing the wrong direction for the movement that it absorbs. They all crack.
To prevent it cracking again, take a piece of flat stock and weld it 90* onto the existing piece, so that it makes an 'L', vertically.

I haven't updated lately, I've been doing a career change but still driving my car. She needs some attention like transmission and engine in the near future.
The latest project is for a customer a 55 fairlane crown vic with 37k original miles in really good shape. I've done all the body work and painted it the original colors and about ready to ship it back to the customer so he can reassemble all the trim and new interior and glass. Here's a few pics

Road construction is my new gig, I bought a tractor, belly dump, and a side dump. Only worked 10 days last year paving and the pay is good.
Auto body and paint is my trained profession and have done it for years but only a few show quality cars. To do some of these cars it takes a lot of time and most owners don't want to spend the money to do it right. So I only do ones that the owners have deep pockets and want a stellar job. Restorations take a ton of time that you never get payed for and each one is a challenge, but I do enjoy it. I'm not needing more work, it stacks up faster than I can do most of the time. With a loving wife and two kids that are in lots of sports and my daughter is in dance witch all of her competitions are out of state and I try my hardest to make all there events.
Thanks for offer to help boost my traffic, but I turn most everyone down as I don't want to over commit my self.

Well right on. It sounds like you have everything handled just how you want it. There is really good money in road construction up here. I hope you do well, and it affords you more time with your family in the off season.

Working 10 days a year gives you plenty of time to do the well-paying 'side' jobs that you want to do.

I sure hope I work more than 10 days this summer. I want this equipment to pay for it self this year and learning more about the mechanics how everything works. One thing I'm amazed about is parts aren't as expensive as I thought they would be. I just replaced brakes on my belly dump and the shoes were 50$ per drum, so all the way around my trailer was 200$. I figured it was big so it was expensive, and really easy to change.

You've got me thinking more seriously about moving up there.

N14 cummins, and a eatons 10 speed but will be changing it out for a 13 speed or a 15 speed. I need to have a lower 1st gear so I can crawl at about .5 mph so I don't burn up my clutch when I'm getting a load of mill. (The machine that cuts the road for resurfacing and make it level). I believe all my drums are cast and weight around 70 lbs I might need to look in to that. There is probably a price deference I'm sure.

do you subcontract with a GC or for the DOT or how does that work? if you don't mind my asking that is. its interesting stuff.

Haven't updated in awhile, but on daily checking the new posts. Well last summer went well with hauling asphalt and payed off all my equipment, so this year I might be starting earlier. The truck is dug out and ready to go when ever I get the call.

My subie still running and hit 670k last week. The engine is getting tired but still rolling, but burning more oil than ever. I'm at about 1qt in 1000 miles, but the new engine is still at the machine shop. I will need to pick it up this summer and put it in over the next winter.

On a different note I wanted to share this years winter project. The car is a 32' Nash coupe a very rare car beings that a little over 600 were built. The body structure is wood with sheet metal screwed to the wood. The doors, trunk, and the body is supported by some very hard wood and it must be strong because in the early 80s this car was on its lid and not much damage accurred. This car was a challenge and not so nice to work on but over all it came out nice and glad to see it go home so the owner can put the rest together. I have around 4 months in this car but the car has been at the shop for a 1 1/2 years and others has touched it but I did the finish sanding and blocking all those body lines with a spreader to keep them sharp. One other thing is there is not a flat panel on this car, it's all round with compound curves.

That car is gorgeous. It amazes me when I see unique and nice restored cars like this come out of hiding in Alaska.

That really is a good looking car. I wonder if its ironwood. I've worked on some truck beds that were decked with it and it will dull drill bits.

Hi everyone, I was restoring all the pictures on my pages and figured I would do an update. My 90 the transmission was making noise so I removed it,and this the one with the OBX front diff. It lasted about 120k and the diff was started coming apart. The input bearings were all shot and pounded the thrust washers out and ruined forth gear, and it is no longer available thru Subaru. So I picked up a good used one that was good and had new bearings installed, as for the diff I ordered a new Subaru helical front diff and now waiting for it to come from Japan. The OBX worked well and I loved the extra traction I didn’t like the rough casting and the helical gears were deteriorating and metal was flaking off. That’s why I went with an OEM diff because I’m sure the quality is much better.
