Thats great proof that seafoam is actually working, if only cleaning the carbon out of the exhaust.

Driving yesterday I noticed that my pilot bearing is bad already. This one came out of the exedy clutch kit and I'm not happy that it crapped out at 30k. This time I'm going with a Subaru bearing a change release bearing fork (it's due to break again). I will start a thread for a timeline that pulling the engine and swapping clutch can be done in 4 hours.

I will be swapping my flywheel with my spare and inspecting wear and lube every thing and all back together. After that I'm thinking of swapping my brake booster to a single diaphragm unit that I picked up about a year ago.

I'm off to Subaru to get parts.

Is that how you prefer to change the clutch? pull the motor to do it? Or are you doing it that way to service other things too? I've done 2 clutch jobs on Subarus so far (02 WRX & 99 OBS), and it was a pain in the ass each time. Anything to make a job easier is good to know.

It all depends what equipment you have. I prefer pulling the engine forward to access the clutch.

How hard do you drive her?! Aren't the Excedy pieces made by the same company that makes OE pieces for Subaru?
I find it easier to pull the motor to do a clutch.

I drive her like I stole it, even harder in the winter because its so fun. For as many miles I put on in a year the car has always treated me good.

As for my next project, I just picked up a 99 2.5 DOHC engine that has the phase II block, higher compression (10:1)with thrust bearing in the 5 position (in the rear) I will try to do some comparisons between 96-98 engines and post pics.

Exedy makes the Subaru OEM parts, and while they may be very similar I don't think they are identical. This thread on NASIOC talks about decal rattle on the 6spds and the fact that the OEM clutch plate has smaller springs as well as the larger springs while the Exedy aftermarket only has the larger springs.

I don't know if this would be the same for the 5spds, but it's what I found out for the 6spds.

It's the same story for the 5-speeds, I own an oem exedy and oem-replacement exedy 5mt turbo clutch, and the dealership one has the smaller springs inside. Just the larger ones on the replacement.

Ugh... that poor car. I hope you get tipped well for each one of those bags. Car looks good though, I know all too well about how long the "clean" lasts in Alaska. The weather has been weird this year up here in Fairbanks too. Not complaining though, it's been unseasonably warm. :) Happy Holidays Charles!

You need some Outback struts, or maybe just the springs, for the loads you carry (and maybe just for a little extra clearance).

I've been thinking of that, I've already installed post face struts and it helped a little. When I'm loaded I rub the quarters a little on bumps. I'm due for new ones, I installed those 2 1/2 years ago about 100k.

I replaced my coolant sensor today, my a/f gauge was reading rich. Running down the highway at 65 always stayed at a steady 13.1 and didn't fluctuate hardly at all. Now with the new one I'm back at 15.3-15.9 at 65mph, and I'm sure I will find some MPG's that I was missing.

Amazing that a little temp sensor would have that kind of effect. Hopefully your MPG does increase.

You said you needed struts, there a guy selling a new full set of KYBs in Healy right now if you're looking. I think they're for a 2nd gen, but it could be a good deal, especially if you talk them down in price.

Well it was temporary, it's back at 13.1 after about 200 miles. I did remove the o2 sensor and look at it and reinstalled it. The symptoms are: at idle when hot ( fans are kicking on) a/f are great or right after climbing a long hill. Once it cools a little a/f goes back to 13.1. Maybe o2 is getting lazy and not working right at lower temps.

I don't get up north too often in the winter and the cost that I would save I will burn in gas. Thanks for the link, and I would probably pick them up if I were passing thru.

Sorry to hear about the persistent AFR issue. Sounds like you're tracking it down correctly though.

If I drive down to Anchorage later this month, I'll give you a shout. If those struts are still available, and you want them, I could pick them up on my way through. I you don't want them, I may pick them up for myself. ;)

When you replaced the CTS, did you reset the ECU? If not, the old learned fuel trims may be causing some of your issues. I'd reset the ECU and see if that changes anything.

I welded up my exhaust bracket again and tempereally fixed my rear sway bar bushings.

This is starting to get old re welding this every 6 months. It cracks almost in the same area every time. As you can see in the pic I've even added a second piece of metal to stranthen that area.

For my temporary fix on my rear sway bushing I used the sleeve out of the front sway end links and grinded down to fit.

This made it much tighter and it no longer bangs in the rear when it's extremely cold.

Cool. Maybe someday I'll break half a mil in one of my cars. At current driving levels it would take me at least 15 years to get my Outback to that. This thread is inspiring.
