It sounds like the problem has to do with notifying the recipient that he's gotten a PM.

So, first of all, the PM may have actually gotten through despite the error, assuming phpBB adds the PM to the database prior to sending the notification.

And second of all, it kind of looks like maybe phpBB is implementing SMTP wrong or something? You're supposed to send the "RCPT TO" command only after both the "HELO" and "MAIL FROM" commands, and only after that send the "DATA" command. Maybe phpBB is doing it out of order or omitting HELO. Most mail servers are pretty forgiving, though, but maybe this person you're PMing has a mail server that isn't?

This is a new one. Perhaps it was a hiccup in the mail server or something.

I just tried again. Same error code. I need to reply to stant093. He is wanting a set of struts that I have for sale. Can one of you PM him and let him know to email me @ Qman4x4@direcway.com ?

Thanks for the assistance.

OK, just did a test by sending Josh a PM. It appears to have gone through without a hitch. A message I sent to stant093 last night got sent 5 times. It appears to be an issue with his acct and not mine.

Hehehehe... That still shouldn't happen, though, since phpBB should either realize it shouldn't try to contact a mail server at all, or it should try and fail gracefully.

I just sent him an email... hopefully he'll email you soon, Ken.

Hahaha

I constantly get emails back from hotmail, aol, yahoo and any number of ISPs about undeliverable mail. This happens when people, like stan, or azn2nr put in email addresses that aren't valid.

I've changed a few people's addresses to prompt them to fix it, with obviously unintended consequences.

Perhaps an @insertfakedomain.name would help

I just got this error message when posting a reply to a thread (this one). I guess one of the subscribers to the thread doesn't have a valid email address...

The posting did appear to go through though.
