It was just for you. We all knew it would bug you so we all got together back before we even knew you and plotted to spread the evil rumor that some USDM Legacy turbos with 4eat got the VF10 too. Haha, jokes on you.

I care because it's silly to spread incorrect information. The two turbos are different by more than that. Coolant pipes are different, compressor housing is sized different, and clocked differently.
This topic is most definately not suited for the ashtray. If anything it should go in the Misc forum. As it still pretains to the Legacy.
Technical value? How about when someone asks which turbos came on us legacys? Maybe I should retitle it to like, "Oem turbo" or something?

Okay, see this is why we need threads like this.
VF10 and VF11 both have 9 blades on the turbine wheel, not 9 and 10, or 8 and 9 or whatever. Where does all this misinformation come from? It appears as though the turbine sections are the same, and the compressor sections are different. Both have the 15R turbine housing, but the entire compressor housing is different. The compressor inlet elbows are different. The VF10 compressor inlet has the same diameter down to the wheel. The VF11 tapers to a smaller diameter down to the wheel. The compressor inlet elbow mounting is different aswell, when looking at the VF10 from the front of the compressor it has one bolt on the upper left and one on the lower right. The VF11 has one bolt on the upper right, and one on the lower left. The spacing of the bolts is different also. The tabs on the compressor inlet are different to boot, the tabs on the VF10 are perpendicular to the tabs on the VF11, as are all other EJ turbos with the 90 deg inlet. The compressor wheels themselves may be different, but I cannot confirm this yet. The compressor outlet on the VF10 is larger than the compressor outlet on the VF11. The compressor is also pointing to 90 degrees, instead of 45 degrees like the VF11. And finally the coolant lines are different. They both point to their respective coolant tanks, VF10 - #1 cylinder, VF11 - #4 cylinder.
They're two different turbos, how could one come on manuals - VF11(smaller) and another on automatics - VF10(larger), and both work with the rest of the engine?

I know that when I first came to this board 2 years ago, it was something that was going around. I am guilty of spreading the myth a bit.
You tech above is pretty solid (as usual) but I am pretty sure there is a difference in the number of blades on the exhaust turbines between the two turbos in addition to the other differences you highlighted...

I thought it was the compressor wheel that had a different number of blades, not the exhaust turbine....
I thought over seas models got the VF8 on manuals and VF10 on autos.

OK,
I must have mixed up my VF-8 with my VF-29 since I just got the numbers off the VF-8. Not the first time I have made such a mistake. The exhaust housing is as follows:
H6
32R
B52X
20-R
5
Compressor side is:
VF8 9404
215507A
14412 AA041
The last number is the factory part number.
I'll get this info off the VF-10 tonight to add to the database...

Very cool, so there's confirmation of the 20R dealie.
I think you're right, we do need a database for this kind of thing. With measurements, pictures, and such.

Allright. Here's the VF-10 to add to the information:
K2
1J
B52X
15-R
3
Compressor side:
VF10 9111
RHB52 18 332A
14412 AA051
Now here's were it gets interesting. I decided to remove the elbow so I could measure the compressor fan and count the fan blades. When I got inside I found that the 5 compressor blades were double blades. I have only seen this on real high end turbos like a custom built KKK K27's for Porsche Turbo! Can anyone who has ever rebuilt a VF-11 verify whether or not the USDM turbos were the same? And lastly, the VF-10 has 9 blades on the exhaust turbine...
Lastly, the compressor inlet is 45mm at the bend, tapering to 36mm at the fan, and the outlet is 36mm.
I no longer have a VF-11 in my possession to post up this info, so hopefully someone will pipe in with the same info on that.
Also, since we are trying to make this FAQ material, I am going to remove my first couple of posts, and suggest others do the same...

All of the RHB's I've seen have double blades, VF11 included. I think I'm going to buy a digital caliper and measure this VF11. Great information Matt.
Is it possible to take some measurements of the turbine sections aswell?
Is it safe to assume the second line of information on the compressor housing of the VF8 is missing the RHB5 part?
This VF10 I've got here has different numbers:
VF109205
RHB5211397A
L2
D2
Maybe this type of stuff is like serial numbers, or very detailed sizes, like the A, B, C/1, 2, 3 of the pistons?

Thawa,
On your VF-10, I don't see the part number listed? I would expect the serial number (following the VF10) to change. But maybe the part number is the same?

Oh, I just posted the numbers that were different. The part number is the same. At least on our two turbos.
Is P18 the exhaust housing on the 29?

sorry guys i am a bit confused on the #'s on the turbos...
I see the spot where it says VF then 5 numbers......
I have a bunch of genuine subie turbos but none are the exact same number. I have a VF 11011 VF 11017 VF 10... VF 48...(i am at home now) VF 28... and a TD04L. I Think the 48 and 28 are old school (ea82)but i am not sure.
Is there a difference in the vf11's?

I don't fully understand the numbering system, but I don't think the last 4 digits are used in normal designation. So if you have a turbo with 6 digits, like VF109111, you would drop the last 4 digits, and what you're left with is the normal designation, VF10. Or if you have a turbo with 5 digits, like VF11017, you drop the last 4 digits, and what's left is the normal designation, VF1. So if you can post the numbers on it
