Oh, sorry. I guess i just figured everyone hung on my every word and knew all about my woes. ;)

#4 let go in my motor a little over a year ago. I swapped in the Boost Junkie motor last winter and am just now getting ready to crack the heads and see what's up in my old motor.

I have multiple threads about different aspects of the demise. It was so bad that if I took out my oil dipstick, exhaust would come out!

Here's one thread where we first started to talk about it.

Your engine has been sitting for a year and you haven't done this? It should take you about an hour to do, assuming the turbo and intake manifold are still attached. Get off your arse and do some teardown, boy!

the #4 piston will have the edge cracked off, broken ring or two same cylinder, scoring in the same cylinder

well at least you had to pull the dipstick out to get exhaust gas, I've seen cars driven around that blew into the crankcase so hard, that the dipstick was wired down to keep it from blowing out the hole all by itself
That beer you are drinking cost more than my car

I doubt it was a cracked ringland, the motor would have siezed, wouldn't it?

Probably burned a piston?

If you had low compression and exhaust coming out of the dip stick then my first though would be ring damage and then to piston damage. I could see that if it happened at high power and rpms that any small damage to a ring or piston would just damage what it contacted to allow the parts to keep moving, imho.

When #4 in my engines went out, I had shattered the ringlands, the rings and lost pieces of them into the bowels of the engine. I even cracked one piston clear across the face.

The only reason i sufferred some cylinder wall damage was because I kept running the motor until it barely ran at all.

Not necessarily. I have seen two STi's blow #4's ring lands and keep driving for a month or more afterwards. They were burning oil, blowing smoke, and way down on power, but they drove. When I tore one of them down, the lands were still held in place by the rings. I had to use a screwdriver to pry them apart.

And I have heard tale of a local drag racer who had a 1.8l he turbo'd that he ran on 2 cylinders for the quite a while because he couldn't afford a shitty old shortblock from the junkyward at the time...

HAHAHA, I know! What's worse is that I've had it torn down enough that all is left to do is to remove the timing belt, sprockets and then crack the heads, for almost 2 weeks now!

I am a very busy guy though and I never have enough time in the day to do everything. Plus I just grenaded my tranny so I've been a little down.

Yeah, I wasn't able to just park the car either. I tried to drive it as little as possible but I did keep driving it at times and it got progressively worse until I finally put my foot down and parked it. I'm expecting cylinder wall damage.

Broken ringlands can be driven for a LONG time. But I went to the drag races twice, then to a rallycross where the motor finally gave up after the 2nd run. Somewhere in this time period I suspect the cylinder wall damage happened.

And how the damage happened is part of a ring got loose and scraped up and down the wall.

There were parts of rings and ringlands in the oil

No. :( I'm just so damn busy. I just need a about a half an hour to get down stairs and do it.

I did however get my car up on engine stands, took out the intercooler, removed the DP and got the axles removed in preparation for the tranny swap.

...and a 2 by 4, and a good big rubber malet. teardown is fun, i think the most i have done is like 4 or 5 in one day but that was about a year ago, my other friend has a record at somewhere around 7. The front of his shirt was transparent by 3:00.

OK, when Phil came up to help with my tranny swap we went ahead and cracked the head off and.....and......nothing. Head looked good. Cylinder wall was in great shape. You could still see all the honing markes. Piston looked good (what we could see of it) and the lower skirt looked good too. We didn't pull the piston but hopefully it will be ok and just need new rings! We couldn't believe it. We kept expecting some horrible damage and couldn't find any. It was all so anticlimatic!

Hopefully I'll crack the block and everything sometime soon and know for sure what all is wrong.
