I just purchased a 95 Legacy Wagon for winter driving here in New England and am very pleased with all aspects of the car except the MT shift linkage. I've been reading the many threads on this topic and have looked at the offerings from Kartboy, Energy, etc. I'd like to replace the bushings with something better than stock but it appears that the aftermarket doesn't sell them for cars built prior to 98. Have I missed a vendor who might supply these or must I settle for stock bushings? Is it possible to adapt the later car bushings to a 95?

The front bushings from kartboy will work, as well as the rear bushing.

There's several threads in here about people replacing the bushings, you may want to search.

Energy Bushing #1170 is for the front. Kartboy's 5-speed rear bushing will work. Their 5-speed 2 peice front bushing works too, but it costs 3 times as much as the Energy bushing.

I made my own rear shifter bushing. I made a thread about how i did it.

I did read your thread BAC5.2 on the rear bushing and I plan to try that. I've studied many of the threads on this topic but it wasn't very clear what bushings will work on a 95 MT. In the attached image (which is from a 03 Forester manual), it appears that the bushings labeled (A) will be included in the Energy or Kartboy kit. I assume the 'front' bushing is the one at the u-joint. Are the ones going through the shift rod the same part? Also, do you typically replace the stay bushing (unlabeled)? In the Forester breakdown of the shift rod, the ball on the end is referred to as a bushing too. Is this replaceable on the 95 legacy shift rod?

P.S. - I haven't yet figured out how to attach an image....

The 'front' bushing is the large round bushing where the carrier link of the shift linkage mounts to the transmission. The rear bushing is the one that mounts the carrier link to the body. If you look in my thread you can see the front and rear bushings.

O.K. I've got the Energy front (stay) bushing and the Kartboy rear bushing. What I can't find are new bushings for the shifter u-joint. Are these not a popular aftermarket item? Must I get these from the Subie dealer?

There are no aftermarket bushings for the u-joint. Those of us that have replaced them are using custom stuff.

Well.....it depends....if you have the old style, yah they should be ok. I don't like the extra flex in the newer style joint bushings.

But if you get new ones (you probably have the old style), you should be good.

I just removed the shift linkage and found that the horizontal half of the joint (closest to transmission shaft) had very worn out bushings while the other half of the joint had no wear at all. I imiagine someone must already have replaced these somewhere along the line. I'll see what my local dealer has to offer tomorrow....
