Cable chains bad?

Due to unforeseen budget constraints (like my fucking transmission needing a replacement), I probably won't be able to buy snow tires this year. Being the car is AWD, is it a bad idea to run cable chains on the front tires? This would only be a few miles to/from school. Not long highway driving.

No it's not a problem. It's even what the owner's manual says to do.
