removing the rear diff

Post by dzx »

What's involved with removing the rear differential? I found a 91 turbo at the junkyard here and I'd like to grab the LSD tomorrow.

Do you have any offset box wrenches? They help.

Otherwise it's not difficult. Unbolt the driveshaft, the outriggers, pull the rear axles, and unbolt the diff from the carrier. That should about do it. It's been a long time since I pulled the diff out of a Subaru (the Boostjunkie Legacy was the last one I took out) but it didn't take long and was fairly easy with the car on jackstands.

Axles off (punch out pins, then pull off when you drop the diff), driveline off (4 bolts), 4 12 point 17mm bolts at the front of the diff,
2 12 point 17mm bolts at the rear...

Pull forward, and its out :D
