gutting downpipe
any reason I can't just take the downpipe off and drill/smash/crush/push/generally eliminate the cat? Everyone raves about new dp's, and I'm not getting inspected for another year now. on top of that I've heard of people running catless passing inspection. Anyways, are there any dangers from gutting the downpipe other than risking speeding tickets?

Just get a custum one done or get a prefab like the HKS for 150 bucks or so, and keep the stock downpipe around. You never know in your area it might not pass emissions. Or if you sell the car the new owner may want it returned to stock. Then what? You'd have to shelve out for a new or used stock downpipe which would be $$'y.

As mentioned, OBD1 computers don't have a second O2 senser for cat efficiency. So no you won't get any CEL's

So are you saying that I could hook up an a/f gauge to the stock o2 sensor and get some REAL values outta it?

If it's anything like the WRX wideband O2 sensor, it'll have a base voltage like 3.5V (on the WRX). A change in this voltage in either direction (IE 3.2 or 3.8 for example) would signify a leaner or richer mixture. The ECU actually reads a milliamp signal, but the information can be gathered by voltage also.

The FSM gives the following info.
At idle, the O2 sensor should read between .1 - 1.0 V
(MT) 1.0 V would signify rich mixture
(MT) 0.2 V would signify lean mixture
(AT) 0.7 V would signify rich mixture
(AT) 0.0 V would signify lean mixture

Hmmmm, those numbers seem similiar to the values given for my obd-2 o2 sensor in the GT . . . Now I gotta figure out what the bosch wideband o2 sensor outputs are . . .
Anybody know?
