Taking apart rear diff ?'s

Post by skid542 »

So after having this beautiful JDM 4.11 VSLD rear diff internals sitting around for a couple months I'm finally tearing into it. Taken waay too long to get to this stage and I have hit my first road block.

After taking the side bearing retainers off. How am I supposed to get the internals and ring gear out? I've tried wiggling and rotating it but it doesn't seem to want to clear the housing. Am I missing something? Do I have to take the ring gear off first? If so, suggestions on how? Does anyone know the torque specs for the side bearing caps or the bolts that hold the ring gear to the internals?

Any help would be appreciated. A little dis-heartening to not even be able to get it apart :-/.

Thanks.

Don't know if this will help, but I scanned from my Subiesport:

It is a bit helpful. Looks like I just need to do some more wiggling. Thank you.

Anybody have any ideas on torque specs?

I would guess they are the same as the torque specs on our VLSD.

69-83 ft-lb for the bolts holding the ring gear to the carrier.

18-25 ft-lb for the bolts holding the rear cover to the case.

123-145 ft-lb for the nut holding the flange onto the pinion shaft.

6.5-8.7 ft-lb for the bolts holding the side retainers onto the case.

Hope that helps.

Don't know if this is too late of a reply or not?? But anyway...

If your diff is like the one pictured in the article that n2x4 posted where the axle stubs are part of the DOJ and fit into the differential, then yes all you have to do is find the proper position and it will come right out.

If the diff is the other type that has axle stubs in the diff that go into the DOJ, then you first need to remove the stubs. Once the DOJ is off, look into the center of the stub, there is a small reverse torx headed bolt that holds the stub into the carrier. Some have used a standard 6 point socket of the right size and pounded it onto the bolt and turned it out. I tried that and stripped them so I used an angle grinder to cut off the stub flush to the oustide of the case. This was on a diff that i was scavenging the ring and pinion out of, so destruction of the carrier wasn't an issue.

Anyone have a size on that reverse torx bolt? i tried a few sockets from sears but they have to be deep well to get even remotely close to fitting.
