spdracr wrote:does your wagon have tapered springs in the rear? if they are tapered you'll need 04+ STi rear tophats. if they are not tapered than you can use anything 92-2004 for any model subaru as they are all the same in the rear.
1st and 2nd gen (legacy or impreza) rear tops are not interchangeable. The 04+ impreza tops have the wrong pattern for his strut tops.

He needs the Group N tops specifically for a 90-91, which you can get from z-1 auto.

You can also buy from Japanparts.com if you don't feel like getting ripped by Adam at Z1.

Japanparts charges the actual cost, which was 6300 yen each last I checked. Shipping is like $20 on those I think.

It's all here: http://www.bbs.legacycentral.org/viewto ... 6219bce76f

Nevermind the guy that showed you were to get them at half price.

Also, as I said in the other thread, and as spdracr pointed out, it depends on the springs you're using.

I called Z-1 Auto and they are outta stock :(
I think I'm gonna order the Group N fronts from Jamie (SubieGal)
and put new stockers in the rear, as I don't want to wait like 8 weeks for Japanparts.com. I've got new GR2's in the garage to be put on before the next track day @ La Junta Sept. 30th.

I'm pretty sure it only took 7-10 days to get my mounts from japanparts Japanparts also has the fronts cheaper than subarugenuineparts. 6 bucks each cheaper. They come by air, not ship. Whatever though, do what you like.

Yep, You are correct that it shows that Boxer4Racing aka Teague's shows the Rear Group N strut Mounts for 1st gen. Legacy. Now whether or not they are in-stock, I'll see...

That's how the internets work.

Or maybe I just need to spend less time at nasioc.

Hey while I'm off topic did you use to have a different screen name here or something?

or, ST2031055000 ?
As yet I haven't seen part #'s for the rears...

2005 sti springs

Post by slowjoe »

since these do not fit the stock struts, i was wondering if i could get some front kyb GR-2's(or equivalent) for a 2005 sti and fit that with the rear stock wagon springs and rear kyb gr-2's for my 94 FWD wagon? any suggestions? all i have now is my stock suspension setup for my fwd 94 wagon. i have part numbers for the gr-2's all around but i figured why not just switch in some 2005 sti springs to up the rate? i also have the rear springs for the sti but i am not sure whether they would be worth the trouble because my rear springs are already fairly high.

Can the three bolts on the rear mount/top hat of a 1990 FWD fit into a 1991 AWD model chassis?? I know that the rubber seat that is between the mount and the spring is the same diameter. I haven't found out if it bolts straight in yet. At Subaru and on the parts page the part number is different.
Does anyone know if FWD rear top hats/mounts can fit in an AWD car?
I am trying to put 04 Sti springs on my GC, and I know that 91 AWD top hats will make it fit. Im not sure if FWD or the wagons have a similar or the same top hat.

So I need to replace my shocks and struts on my SS, A dealership near me is able to get some kyb agx's and GR2's 300-500 for each set, for the 91. Since I'll be doing these I also have an option of 04=07 Sti springs. But my question is will the Sti springs raise or lower my ride heigth I would like to balance out my car, so the front end isnt pointing to the sky. as I've found and been told the springs are 257 f and 217 rear?????????????? Any help?

Ok, I've read through the entire thread and I'm a little confused. There is conflicting information on what will work on the rear of FWD cars. I just want to make sure that I've got all my info straight before I tear my car apart and find out I've got the wrong crap.

I've got a 90 FWD and currently I've got a set of KYB GR2 02-03 WRX struts waiting to go on the car. It seems to me that some people are saying that as long as I have the correct springs and perches I might just have to adjust for a little camber in the rear, but others are saying that most wheels and tires will not fit at all?

Currently on the car is just a poor worn out stock suspension and stock 02-04 WRX wheels and tires. I had to use 6mm spacers to keep the tires from rubbing on the spring perch.

I just want to make sure that I can make this work without spacers and the tires rubbing on the perch. Quick eyeball measurements show the spring perches on the WRX struts to be higher than the legacy struts.

I just want this thing to stop rubbing in weird places and not feel like a worn out lumber wagon. Any insight guys?

AWD rear struts will NOT work on a FWD car. So the rear WRX struts you have won't work.

The AWD rear strut body is shorter due to the mounting point being offset and raised on the AWD rear knuckle.

AWD springs should work, assuming you match the correct spring with the correct top hat/perch.

For your 1990. You have the tapered rear springs. You can see what I'm talking about in these pictures.

http://www.main.experiencetherave.com/s ... ages/susp/

Whiteline does make springs, or at least they did. Others have used the 04 STi rear tapered springs with the STi top mount. I think there's a little modification of the mount point, but I believe it does work.

Ok, I see. Hmmm.

Well it looks like working in a Suby parts department has it's advantages :D

I just compared an AWD rear knuckle to my FWD rear knuckle.

Everything lines up with the exception of the strut mounting point.

So in theory I should be able to take the knuckle/hub assembly from an AWD and use the outer end of a CV joint as my spindle, making the AWD rear struts fit perfectly

...And I live in colorado, there's usually plenty of AWD Suby's in the boneyards around here. I might have to replace the bearings, but again I wouldn't pay full price for them :-D

Normally I'd just get the proper struts, but I've got $400 worth of good WRX struts at home for free.

Not really, I've got all the tools available to me in the shop and I can trade lunch with one of the techs for some help if needed.

Now to just double check which years will work before I hit the junkyard this weekend

I love having the parts catalogue at my fingertips :-D

Edit: 90-94 Legacy, 93-01 Impreza and 98-02 Forester rear knuckles all update to the exact same part number. Bearings, seals and hubs follow suit as well.
