Winter Tire Selection Questions

Post by smh0101 »

What are good snow tires? I plan on snowboarding this year with the Subie and need some. The tires will be going on the stock Leg Turb wheels. I hear that Blizzacks are good and that Michelin X-Ice are also good... Any personal experience with either? Any info would be nice...

And what speed rating is normal or suggested for winter tires? Many seem to be QR rated.

Thanks in advance.
Spencer

I am trying to keep cost under $300. I am paying for them and have little money so price is a big issue.

If you're going strictly on price, pick up some Hankooks. They are quiet, very grippy, and dirt cheap. Have them on the wife's Jetta in winter.
$55 ea at Discount, free shipping.

The directional tread is almost a direct copy of the Nokian Hakkas ($150 ea)
and they have stud holes to boot.
Get the skinnyest you can, better traction...

The Blizzaks are pricier, grip VERY well for a while, but wear quickly thru the soft muli-cell compound if used a lot on dry pavement.

My advice: Don't cheap out on tires, it's just not worth it.

I'm going to get a set of Blizzak REVO's they seem to be pretty decent tires. I don't have any experience with them but I've done a little research.

those are very good tires.

i have the WR on my wagon and will more than likely get onother set for the SS when the Hakka 1s need replacing in 08.

unlike the blizzaks the nokian hakkas, RSis and WRs use the same compound for the whole usable tread depth. and that stuff grips awesome. and the hakka siping is amazing on ice. we dont use salt on the roads in ND and they grip the ice great.

my only complaint is that the wagon doesnt have enough power to break them loose easliy and it kind of takes the "fun" out of winter driving in empty parking lots.
