Intercooler Install Pix *finally*

Post by TheSubaruJunkie »

I installed this thing a few months ago. Just now got around to taking some pix. THis is an intercooler I bought from a local board Member, I think it was Imprezive.

So far its a pretty nice setup. Im still running stock boost. It dropped from 7psi to about 5psi at max boost. I have a boost controller I have yet to install. Can't really notice the difference with the Auto Gearbox sucking all my power, but I know its doing some good.

Thats a really nice intercooler though. I would have rocked it on my car if I didn't sell it to subarujunkie.

Small but thick.

Measure the core and compare it to other intercoolers. It's bigger than a saab 900 thats for sure.

Yeah its a pretty good sized intercooler. I think its plenty big for the 2.2 on stock boost.

The car came with no I/C, so it is a big improvment over stock & looks way better than a saab i/c.
I'd try to get the stock heatshield back on the turbo to avoid heatsoaking the i/c if possible.

I'm sure you could run @ least the boost levels run on saab i/cs with no probs.

From 7 psi to 5 psi? You should have been getting around 8.7 psi stock, I wonder why you weren't.

There is a heatsheilding material sold by DEI that works well, it is basically a layer of heat wrap topped by a aluminum looking blanket. I used this on my OBS & it helped keep the turbo side of the TMIC much cooler.

The auto will steal more HP than a 5spd, but you will still feel something by up'ing the boost on a 4eat car.

I run between 8 (low )& 15 (high) psi on my 4eat LSS & the difference between the 2 levels of boost is night & day.

You should at least get the boost back the factory level of 8.7psi, but I think 10psi should be OK on a healthy engine.

It could have been 8.7ish. Now that i remember, my ECU Scan tool did register 8.5 before i got the IC installed. I should run it again and compare it to my boost gauge to see if things are calibrated correctly.

BXSS, now that you mention all that... maybe this weekend I'll put my MBC in and crank it up to 10. The engine is healthy, just pisses oil out of the valve covers onto my up-pipe.

Make sure you can moniter boost before you turn it up, if you do not have a gauge put one in the car - VDO makes a good gauge that reads 30mm vac & 25psi boost that sells for less than $30 from summit racing.
I have had problems with Autometer gauges reading 1- 2 psi with the car off...

Its easy to blow motors by overboosting (though your OEM boost cut should prevent that).

I had a few A/M boost gauges do this over time, & 1 new in an unopened/wrapped box that read 1psi.

Subarujunkie enjoy your I/C & boost (10psi)!

So what I'm seeing here is to stay away from Autometer for a boost gauge then. Is it worth tracking down a stock WRX column mount gauge then, if not who's been the most solid company to go with so far?

A/M boost gauges must be made in or getting parts from China now because they will eventually fail to zero out.

I had that happen to 3 gauges in a row on my OBS-t.
I then switched to the lower cost ($15-20 cheaper) VDO gauge I mentioned above & all has been well for the past 3 years.

The WRX gauge is in KPA or some other weird unit of measure, are tiny, & expensive. I'd do the 60mm VDO for $30ish new...

Huh, weird... And I thought they would have been one of the stronger companies to stand behind too. So sad really.

The problem i had was finding a gauge that didnt read to 30psi or 60psi. I wanted a gauge that read just past 15psi so I can get a more accurate reading. Its hard to tell the difference between 7 and 8 psi on a gauge that goes from 0 to 30.

Anyhow, the gauge i have has been working great since I installed it. Not too sure how accurate it is, havent really thought much about it.
