hi group,
brain teaser.......
question... My RS Liberty runs std wheel/tyre combo of 205/60 15. To go to 16" rims the correct size would be 205/55 16.
Trouble is with the cars load rating of 91 there isn't much choice in tyres.
In the Wheels magazine road test, back in1992, the speedo error on the RS was 5.2% out, reading slower than the actual speed, eg, 80km/h on the speedo was true speed of 76 km/h.
If I go to 215/ 55 16 then by my calculations, the speedo error would be 2.5% slower than the 205/60 15, std.
So overall, if the std setup is 5.2% slower and I increase tyre/wheel size to 215/55 16, then I have decreased the error, 5.2% less 2.5%.
So now my speedo error is only 2.7% slower.
80km/h would now be a true 78km/h.
In actual fact I have made the speedo more accurate.......
Do I have this right?
Rod.

All speedo's will read slightly different (most manufacturers make
the speedo slightly pessimistic) The way to test what speed you are
actually doing when your speedo says 100 is on a dyno.
My car when showing 100Km/h on the speedo was actually doing 98.97Km/h

It may be on the Miata.net page, but it applies to just about everyone i can
think of that has a tyre on their car. =) You input what your stock size is
and what size you're going to, and it tells you the margin of error on your
speedo.

The important thing is gearing. Smaller tires will give you better acceleration. Are you really worried about 5% error???
If you get caught speeding at 40km/h over posted, you are still in trouble...(hehe)

tyre size /speedo
Yes I know,
I am going to stick to original specs anyway, mainly because if i get caught with a flat out in the counrty, my spare needs to be the same size....... will all get too expensive buying another rim and another tyre + the i do not think it will fit neatly in the spare wheel well.
thanks.. Rod
