Starter Differences?

Post by FormulaSuby »

I was wondering if someone can help here. I have a JDM EJ20R motor and have it mated to a 1994 Legacy FWD transmission. Just tried cranking it over tonight, and the starter is quite a ways away from the ring gear. The starter I am using as well as the flywheel are from JDM car. Would anyone know if there are different length starters available? It is hard to tell from auto parts pics.

Thanks,
Steve

Dumb question -- did you apply power to the solenoid, or just the motor? The solenoid moves the pinion gear forwards to mesh with the ring gear.

It appears to be a difference in starter position to flywheel location and/or tooth count. Power was to the solenoid...

Probably not very helpful, but there are length differences between auto and manual starters for the EJ22T.
