Does anyone have some suggestions why it could be hard to start my
1990 Legacy LS (non-turbo)?
I don't have the check engine light on (anymore - I had to replace
the purge control solenoid and temp sensor), I replaced the plugs,
wires, and air and fuel filter. The vacuum lines appear to be OK.
It's hard to start (I have to crank it for a few seconds and give it
gas) when the engine is "hot" and "cold". The only time it isn't hard
to start is if I start it immediately after I stop it (it starts
right up without having to step on the gas).
Also, the idle isn't very smooth.
I am planning on replacing the timing belt (it has 144K miles, I'm
the 3rd owner and I don't have the maintenance history).
Thanks.

I had to replace my coolant temperature sensor when i first got my
Turbo, it was occasionally hard to start. That fixed it. I also
replaced the Throttle Position Sensor with a used one, and that
helped cure both a CEL and annoying hesitation.
CTS is cheap, TPS is NOT.

I replaced the CTS too, but it didn't really make any difference (I
did check the computer and it is using the module). I "looked" at the
CEL and it looks OK to me
(the computer isn't reporting any
problem). I hate just replacing parts - especially when they are
expensive, but maybe I'll have to start?
Thanks for the info.

What type of gas you running in it? If you are running premium, don't.
Run 89 or 87. My 90 has issues starting/sputter on startup if I run
premium. Also may want to check MAF sensor, see if it's really dirty.
And possibly O2 sensor.

Dave, what type of hesitation are you talkin about? Is it the
"infamous" subaru hesitation, or something different.

I'm running regular (glad to hear I shouldn't run premium).
I did some "simple" checkes on the MAF and O2 sensors and they appear
to be OK.
I'm now leaning to my fuel injectors (see new post).
Thanks for the suggestions.
