Anyone know anything about this kit ?
http://www.id-usa.com/product.asp?CID=0&PID=24
a Retrofit Kit in box for $35 ?
if it would work on 90 I would love to get it .
but I have always been told to Retrofit my dead AC it would cost $400.. still need to look into that.
Ok so anyone try this ? can you just change the fitting to the new adapter and that is it? this look too good to be true..
I love it if it worked I need AC again the wagon had sat too long with running the AC in SF for a few years so you know how that works..
Ok will hope some can answer me on this.
Thanks

I figure as much as I have work on cooling system before ..quicklook wrote:to good to be true.
have an ac shop do the changeover if you want it to work and keep working.
I was going ask before seeing this kit as to what has to be changed out to go from R12 to r13a?

Please search for posts by me. I've done this, and it's not quite as involved as some say, in terms of money, but you need to be thorough with your cleaning.
Basically you need to get all the old mineral oil out. Esther oil is compatible with mineral & PAG, but I don't think it lubricates the compressor as well, which has caused several dead used compressors. I am not using PAG 100 oil.
You will need to replace the receiver drier, add a little oil in there, and the rest in the compressor. My previous threads talk about how much oil to add.
Then you charge the system with R134a to 75-80% of the R12 capacity.

So you think this type of product would do the job or would it be better to find the help of someone and do it more to how you did it in the post?
I mean I been told tons of things by different shops and none of them seem to be the same and that where I see this at Kragen and think ? they are like change this do this and you're done...no sorry I not a some who knows ton but I do know a cooling system is that easy to change ..Charge maybe but I had my questions.
An sorry I did search I was looking to see if any had used this EZ Chill systems more than info how convert right now.
I was going to post and search out info but wanted to see what others thought of the EZ chill kit .
thanks

As for that kit working.....I don't know. AC systems are just that....systems....everything needs to be working together in a process. If you have something not quite right....it may kind of work not at full capacity for a little while or a long time. The condition of your system now, how much refrigerent is in there, etc will all play into how well it will work.
So I can't really say whether that kit will work for you or not. All I can say is what I know needs to be done, to do the conversion properly

Thanks I already figure it would be best to listen to Josh's sage advice but still I going to see if I can find some that will do it right and for the best price.. the main Subaru shop they said around $400 and I feel that was bit higher than I wanter but they like to use OEM parts and not as much after market part. they do sometime use used part but only tested parts and not with out telling or asking me first.
they do their best to save me on $$ but some time it's not east to do so.
I had my heater core replace and that was very costly and i wills till need to get new shifter as this one is a bit stiff from the U-joint going out last month.. they got it to work but I rather have it working more like it did.
the AC went out some time back i just been putting it off but thought i get it done as my wife would be very happy with me if i did and if I could do with out killing have our bank account even better. the people had the wagon before us were college student's in San Fransisco and never ran the Ac unless they came over to Sacramento to see the mom and dad but at most the wagon sat and not used so seal may grown old and all so the AC ran for about a month or so then stated to die out .
I checked and there is no coolant in there that I tell.
Thanks for the info I will do my shopping and see who I can find that will give me good price to get all done right.
And Josh I loorked over lot of your post and you done some great stuff to make sure we all know more on Subaru's Thanks

Ya in order to do this properly you need to do a complete vacuum of the system. You shouldn't mix r134A with r12. Better off looking at a refrigerant MADE to mix with r12. Some refrigerants include R414B, but R406A is the better option since you don't need to change the oil and it is supposedly 10% more efficient. Either way it should work. I think R406A is more threatning to the enviroment so you need to have a license. R414B I guess is enviroment friendly. There are many different refrigerants available now adays with sealants and are 100% compatible with mineral oil and R12 refrigerant.

Not sure about the above kit, but I have used a $40 R12-R134 retrofit kit from Autozone that came with the high + low fitting adapters, a filling tap/gauge, & a couple of cans of refrigerant/oil/stop leak premix.
I put this in one of my old Integras + my 85 Corolla & it worked/works perfectly.
A few friends have used the same kit I did with success as well - I actually have never heard of someone having a problem with the kit.
There really is nothing to it - put the low fitting adapter on your car, figure out the ambient temp, turn the A/C on to max, & put the appropriate amount of refrigerant in the LOW side port (based on the ambient temp the correct pressure range on the low side port will change).
If you mess up & overcharge the car (hot air blowing out of the vents, compressor locking up....) just let a little gas out of the low port by pressing down on the fitting with something - no big deal just say sorry to the ozone layer & ride your bike a couple of days to even things up...
This will not fix a leak in your system or a bad compressor, so I'd put in just enough to let the compressor engage & have the fans turn on, then I'd stop & make sure the car holds the charge before fully filling the system.
If your compressor still turns on the day after you did the test charge you are good to go & can fill it up.
I remember the moron from 2 guys garage saying everything had to be changed to convert from R12 to R134 years ago.
Now he is on the DVD instructions included in the new retofit kit!
