Hi List,
I live in Auckland, NZ am considering buying a 1990 Subaru Legacy RS
Sedan am am wanting to know what I should look out for when buying
one, common problems etc.
Are they reliable cars when looked after?
Also what sort of power/performance can be achieved with a 3"
exhaust, air filter and boost increase?

Nothing really, just make sure the gear changes are smooth, eg no
crunching.
You can get very good performance from these engines, it is hard to
say because because it would depend on boost levels, fuel pressure
etc.

Thanks for the reply Daniel,
So is it just the synchros that go bad? If I did need a new box are
they hard to remove? and roughly how much would a 2nd hand box cost?
Nothing other obvious probs to look for when buying that you can
think of?

Yes, not hard to remove, about $1,000.00 from a wrecker, there are a
few in Auckland now that look after Subaru's. Not really they keep
going and going. Mine has 300,000km on the clock now and it has been
raced on grass, gravel and track, and I have just re-built the gear
box.
