If it's a 4wd, and you have access to all the tools and a lift; doing a
clutch is no prob at all. Maybe 2 hours if you have someone else who has
done it before help; 4-5 hours if not.

okay heres the deal. I have a 91 legacy L. I recently inhareted it
from my mother, who just bought a new car. it has like 185K on it and
needs some work on the engine gaskets. The gaskets aren't too bad
right now, so I'm waiting till next summer to do that. The issue at
hand is one with the Clutch. just messing about I tryed to see what
would happen if I reved the engine to about it's torque peak and
popped the clutch. I reved it to 4.5K popped the clutch, and floored
it. what happened was the clutch slipped a bit and the revs climbed to
about 5.5K then bogged to about 4K and stayed there till the car
cought up. after that things were ok although when I went into second
it slipped a little too... for a while, if I'm in... say second gear,
and I push the pedal down hard, the revs will slip about an eighth of
an inch on the tach then settle back down. so it's not slipping in
normal driving, but when I'm messing around with stuff, it tends to
slip a bit. next summer, I plan on adding a little power, and making
things a little better as far as performance...
my question, is: how in depth is changing a clutch on my Suby? Is
there an aftermarket clutch that has better grip, that's still smooth
enough for regular city use? I'v ripped an engine apart before, and
have access to a real nice shop so time is the only constraint on
changing the clutch out.
any ideas?
thanks

Clutch Issues
Hey Everyone,
I have a 1993 2.2l NA Liberty and I'm having a few problems
with my clutch and am just wondering if they are normal tendancies.
For one, I'm unable to quickly slam the gears in and out of the gear
range. I have to actually ease the gears in slowly.
I have tried other people to test my car as well and they also can't
qick shift the gears. Any ideas..??
Secondly, when the Air-Conditioning is switched on, the clutch has a
tendancy to stiffen up a bit on the release, so it is slow to spring
back up to your foot. Thus making it harder to drive, so I only
switch the Air-Cond on only when I really need too.
ANy one else with the same problems..??
Regards...

Starting to happen on my grammas car... 92 wagon. But then, she's not
interested in speed-shifting anyway. My 2nd gear is a little flaky
sometimes too. Do you hate your car? Why would you want to be
shifting that way?

there is extra drap on the engine. meaning that you need more gas to get
going faster, hence the clutch may slip for a longer time than normal. or in
the back of your head you think it is alot harder because there is a loss in
horse power and need more gas to get off the line. (im not having a go at
you) i often do it myself and i bet a lot of people do but would not own up
to it.

Well, the synchromesh is what stops gearchanges from going "crunch crunch"! To be honest, I'm not mechanically qualified enough to say how you or replace it. However, I suspect that it would cheaper and quicker to change the whole gearbox. Unless the car's been driven like a nutter then you shouldn't really have this kind of problem especially at 108000km (65000miles). My 1.8GL (1990) is only starting to do it a little bit in 4th and reverse and that's done 110000miles. Things is my brother had a BG5 automatic and both his engine and gearbox packed up! Guess it must be luck of the draw!

Clutch Issues
Syncros are somewhat like small metal clutch units that make contact
with the gears when you shift to make the gears run at about the same
speed when you shift so that they do not make noises and go crunch.
They can wear out and need replacement or they can just get dirty. I
have seen some results on transmissions that have been drained, filled
with ATF and a can of Rislone this is a very high detergent mix and
when run for a while will clean things up. If you should have to
replace them I would make sure that to get the latest type. I have a
version 3 transmission with the new syncros and it works great.
Another thing to try is made by BG and is called syncroshift. I use it
and have for sometime even in racing motorcycles it works wonders on
syncro's

with the gears when you shift to make the gears run at about the same
speed when you shift so that they do not make noises and go crunch.
I use it
and have for sometime even in racing motorcycles it works wonders on
syncro's

Clutch Issues
I thought that there were almost 30 replies under my post, but after
reading all of it, my topic turned from Clutch Issues to Internet
slang Jargon dictionary....heheheh
Thanx for your replies guys, I really appreciated....heheheh
One more thing...
Has anyone ever tried putting that "Slick 50" stuff into their
Transmission Lubricants..??
I've experienced a dose of Slick 50 engine oil additive for my
previous car (A Holden VL Commodore, with the 3.0L Straight Six N/A
Nissan Skyline engine) and it worked wonders. My car had noisy
lifters and after pouring that stuff in, the engine ran smoother and
the lifters became quiet to the point that you couldn't hear them at
all....
So I'm considering putting it in for my Transmission to see if I can
get it to run smoother.
Regards....
