fuel pump relay location
Hi
Im new to Subaru and have a 90 legacy AWD auto.
What I would like to know is where is the fuel pump relay located.
She cranks over but I have no fuel pressure.I was going to try to see
power at the relay, but cant find it.I dont have any manuals.
Am I right in assuming there is only one fuel pump, located in the
tank? The snotty parts guy I called at the dealer said there was two.
A wiring diagram or schematic of the fuel system/engine controls
would probably help alot.
Thanks for your help

I believe there is only one pump....I could be wrong....I think there is two relay sending units.....that may be what he was thinking of....but I'm not too sure. I would check in the normal spots for the relay...under the hood where the rest of the relays are.

Hi-Your fuel pump is on the pass. side under the back seat; the relay is parallel to it under the same seat on the driver`s side. There`s a gasketed plate over both & it`ll be dirty, so be careful not to get the dirt in the tank. Good luck---ROD (AZ.)

Sorry to say, but if your car is AWD the snotty parts guy is sorta
right!
In the AWD models the fuel tank has a fuel pump, and a fuel sender.
It sounds like your having trouble wiith the pump. To check the pump
itself, take up the carpet in your boot and on both sides there is a
metal cover, that is screwed on. The fuel pump itself is located in
the fuel tank under the passenger side. (US cars)
So you take off the cover and then the ring of nuts around the top of
the tank and then the pump assembly will just lift out.
So it could be worth checking that. Is easy to access! with the right
tools.

There still isn't two _pumps_, and it's not really under the back
seat... if it's the sedan and not the wagon. For that one, the fuel
pump and all is under the carpet in the trunk on the passenger side.
I had to lift up the back seat in my car in order to get access to
the screws on it, but you do not have to remove it, as the manual
says. The Haynes book is wrong in this case (and others as well).
There is a sending unit in almost the exact same spot on the driver's
side, under the carpet in the trunk, but I believe that is the sender
for the fuel level, and is completely unrelated to the pump. I've
never had to check the relay so I'm not sure where it is, but there
is a schematic of all this in the Haynes book. Even though it's not
exactly right sometimes, it's worth the 12 bucks or whatever it costs
to get that book.
What do you mean you have no fuel pressure? Did you check it or is
the car just dying? Are you sure it's a fuel system problem?

Your right on there only being one pump and it is in the gas tank but
the first thing to check before pulling the pump out is to check under
the rear seat for a connector. I have repaired many of these. They
seem to me to be underrated and most are turning brown from heat and
many have failed. The connector is not on all models but seems to have
at least a 90% higher failure rate than either the relay or the pump.
