No exhaust - poor performance

Post by arktechca »

Tonight I removed everything from the down pipe (1st cat) back. I
am replacing the components. I could not resist taking a rip
down the road. Acceleration was noticeably changed - for the
worse :(

Why ? Apart from soundding sweet there were many lags -
pulsing acceleration and slow revs. It's an auto, '91 Sport Sedan
running stock boost at the moment.

No exhaust - poor performance

Post by Todd Munson »

Did you try reseting the ecu? The computer might have freaked, running
straight off the downpipe is way less restrictive (duh) but would
result in a leaner mixture. The ecu might have pulled timing and
dumped fuel becuase of this, resulting in poor performance.

No exhaust - poor performance

Post by arktechca »

I did reset the ECU while I was doing the exhaust removal. I did not
reset since the "test run". I have however refitted the exhaust and
left out the second smaller cat and swapped the stock muffler for a
free flow (straight through little glass pack) one. I am still
getting poor performance but , as you sugest, am convinced it is an
ECU - timing issue and have posed another question in another post.
Thanks for the replies,

Matt Reese
