NEED HELP IDENTIFYING MY EJ20G ENGINES

Post by William D. Robinson »

I own a pair of similar but not identical EJ20G quad cam turbo engines. I know that they were both pulled from Japan market single turbo Legacy cars with automatic trannies, but that's all I know. They are palletised and I don't want to unbundle them to pull off heads to see exactly what I've got. If anyone can tell me anything about either of these engines, particularly whether they have hydraulic or solid valve lash adjusters, I would be very grateful. At the very least, the cam covers are different and I kind of think the heads are different too. What do I have here?

The first one has serial number 062718/061243 940883
It came with a Mitsubishi TDO4 turbocharger

The second one has serial number 904250/902737
The bar code on the paper tag on the center timing belt cover says"
EJ20GDX4CE-CO 865434 1Z10
It came with an IHI VF10 turbocharger

Which is newer? Can you tell month of manufacture? Are they both closed deck?
Exactly what do they have for valve train and lash adjustment? How exotic are they? Is one more exotic than the other? Where can I get a hot deal on used plastic timing belt covers for these?

NEED HELP IDENTIFYING MY EJ20G ENGINES

Post by milehial2000 »

I will be getting a Impreza being trailered in from out of town to
work on with a EJ20 engine today and will check it and we have someone
at the shop who also has one in his Legacy that I will be able to
check tommorrow. These engines seem to be gaining in numbers so I
wonder if it would be a good idea to create some sort of database or
something on them to ID them and list part numbers and sources. As it
stands I have very little information on them.

I translated (babelfish.altavista.com) this document from a Japanese
web site (i lost the link), so not all of it makes sense. But here is
what it says for your engine code:

E - engine
J - horizontal opposition 4 cylinder 16 valve
20 - 2000cc class
G - DOHC MPi Turbo
D - 1978 exhaust regulation conformity
X - 4WD * MT
4 - "Year reforming division" ??
C - "Specification difference division(Cruise control) = Lever
equipped * cam GT specification for C = cruise control (200ps
specification)"
E - "Specification difference division
(Power steering * air conditioner) = power steering equipped * air
conditioner to be attached.

I have no idea how accurate this is, but unfortunately we dont have
that much information to go on. I will upload the whole document soon.

Is there any way you can upload this to the "Files" section Brett?
It would be invaluable for those looking at transplants.

Thanks!
