Transmission Gearing

The discussion has been raging, and we're still not sure what's going
on. Manuals may have it wrong, and chaos reigns....

I refer you to the press packet from 93 that i scanned in here:
http://www.xmission.com/~dac/library/93_packet_info.htm

Under the Sedan, it states that the MT/FWD, MT/L/AWD and AT/FWD FD is
3.7. AT/AWD is listed as 3.9, while MT/AWD is 4.111.

The Sport Sedan is MT/AWD in most/all of these cases we're talking
about, so it *should* be 4.111 gearing.

The Wagon does differ slightly. MT/FWD is 3.7, AT/AWD and AW/FWD are
3.9 while MT/AWD is again 4.11. I'll be damned if they never put the
MT/AWD in the Touring Wagon, but i'll remedy that soon enough.

John from Subaru/Suzuki/Kia is sending me what should be a Legacy
Turbo transmission and LSD from a 93. They're 4.111 gears. He said
that the 91 had 3.9 in the MT/AWD but that most 92-94 had 4.111.

I wish i could find 91, 92 and 94 press packets...the 91 Legacy
Dealer brochure i have doesn't go into gearing.

Dave

OK! here is what i found. I have the 1992 subaru legacy service manual sitting in front of me.

manual transmission section:
fwd non turbo: 3.700
awd non turbo: 4.111
awd turbo: 3.900

automatic transmission section
(no classification between turbo/non turbo):
fwd: 3.7
awd: 3.9

i also have the subaru parts manual(this was nice score i might add) and what i read in the notes section about the rear diff:
91-92: model l,ls,ls.d = 4.111
91 : model turbo with LSD= 3.9
92-94: AT model l,ls, turbo= 3.9
92-94: MT model L = 4.111

i did a conversion from auto(1993) to manual(1991). Since i'm not hearing massive noise/smoke coming out of my center diff I'm pretty sure I have 3.9. The back of my rear diff is marked 3.9.

honestly I wouldn't believe too deeply in a press packet.

ok i got some magic to read your transmission id.

Where did you get the service manuals? Are they worth
purchasing? I'll probably have my car for a long
while, so I was already thinking about trying to find
the service manuals. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. TIA.

Transmission Gearing

That's interesting

In New Zealand our ratios are as follows

non turbo/turbo FWD: 3.90 Non LSD/LSD
non turbo/turbo AWD: 4.11 LSD only
non turbo/turbo AWD: 4.44 LSD only - Late model only mainly found in
WRX's
