clutch slipping on turbo
I had the engine out and replaced the clutch on my 94 turbo. I had the flywheel resurfaced before putting back in. After getting back together the clutch is slipping. It releases fine but slips real bad. The hydraulic clutch is working fine. The pressure plate looked tight against the disk. I pulled the engine again and the pressure plate was tight against the disc. Someone told me that the flywheel has a step on it where the part the hits the disc is higher than where the pressure plate bolts on. I never noticed it before having it resurfaced. I don't want to put it back in until I know what is wrong with it. The old clutch was not slipping when I took the engine out (I was replacing the engine) but was very close to be worn out. Some of the rivets were starting to hit. Does anybody know if the turbo flywheel does have a step or not. This is a pull type clutch.

When you push in the clutch does it disengage/engage high or low?
Is the pressure plate new as well as the clutch disk?
Are you sure its the correct clutch?
Did you spill any oil on the clutch disk somehow?
Are you pressure plate bolts tight?

I do not believe there is a step on our flywheels.
I don't believe there is a step on the flywheel either. I am sure that I would have noticed that before resurfacing. The person my friend was talking to probably thinking of an older subaru.
When you push in the clutch does it disengage/engage high or low?
I didn't drive it much since it was slipping, but it seems to engage closer to the bottom. Since this is a new (used) turbo engine I got on it to see if the turbo would kick in and the rpm's just went up to 6500 and the car didn't. I also stopped it in gear without killing the engine.
How much did they machine off?
I'm not sure what they machined off. Really should not make much difference since the pressure plate bolts flush to the surface.
Is the pressure plate new as well as the clutch disk?
Yes, everything was new.
Are you sure its the correct clutch?
This was actually the third clutch that I ordered. The first one was for a NA car and was a push type. The second one looked ok but the throw out bearing was wrong and there was no way it would snap in or even attach to the clutch fork. The third one (I was hoping would be the charm) looked like the old one. I had a mechanic friend order it for me and he looked at it also and said its the same.

I made very sure not to spill anything on the flywheel or pressure plate or on the disc.

I had them tight. I used locktite on the threads. All the flanges of the pressure plate were tight against the flywheel. The pressure plate has probably 1/8 of inch before the plate hits the stops so it has to be tight against the disc.
The only thing that is different is the flywheel was resurfaced. I'm thinking the new pressure plate is faulty. My mechanic friend thinks it is the flywheel. He told me to put the old one back in to see if it slips now. I said ya and then I will have to take the engine out again. I really don't want to take the engine out for a a third time.

Put in the new clutch and it slips also. I have a new disc I think I am going to put in the old pressure plate and try that. I can't figure what is wrong with this clutch. Two new ones and both slipping. It kills the engine if I let the clutch out in gear with revving the engine a little. But when I get on it in first gear the rpm's go up but the car doesn't accelerate. I hate pulling the engine again.

Pay attention when you bolt the pressure plate down next time. The pressure plate springs should move a bit to compensate for the clutch plate being there. The clearances must be wrong somehow, or the spring fingers on the pressure plate are screwed up somehow.
Its either not applying enough pressure or there is too much clearance for it to apply the correct amount of pressure.

After taking the engine out for the third was looking at everything very close. Could not see anything that was wrong that would make it slip. Checking to see if anything wrong with transmission. I had a friend come over to see if he could see anything. With engine in gear we turned the transmission shaft with the used clutch disc. the car would move as expected. I got in the car applied the brake and he could turn the clutch disc and one of the shafts would turn but the car not move. The passenger side axle was broken. Had no torn boot and visually looked good. I figure it was bad and when jacking up the transmission pulled it apart. Daughter had not complained about the axle making any noise (my daughter drives this car). I've never been so happy about a broken axle before. It acted just like a slipping clutch. I could even stop the car in gear and not kill the engine.
