Bad Speedo gear workaround?

Post by chriskatana »

Is there a workaround for the stripped speedo gear in the dif?
Will later model clusters with non cable driven spedo fit?
Culd you use a signal generator to drive that speedo?

I'd really like my speedo odometer to work and I'm sick of looking at the CEL

Thanks,
Chris

A new what? speedo gear? The one that goes in the differential?
the one that would require me to drop the tranny and split the case just to replace the gear?

I did read, but not in detail, that the gear can be swapped by puling the passenger axle and removing the bearing. but I'm not 100% confident that it's dooable that way. Plus even if it is, I could ruin my ring and pinion if it's not put back together EXACTLY right.

so, you might understand looking for a workaround on this one...?

Thanks,
Chris

I guess I was confused as to what's broken. If you were to try and use a later electronic speedometer, the speed sensor is still gear driven. If the gear inside the trans is broken, then you're screwed. Not a whole lot of options there.

I am sure it's the gear.

Got one. That doesn't fix the check engine light.
