Tyler's Legacy SS.... under an impreza shell

Post by bmxpunk »

Well, I got hooked on Subaru's before I could drive. When it was time to get a car, I told my parents I wanted a 4 wheel drive wagon, more importantly a SUbaru even though I had never driven one much less seen many around. At this moment I think my Dad is convinced I am not a heterosexual, because Wyoming men drive trucks. Not so much the case as I was thinking practically: 4wd since I snowboard, and wagon to haul bmx bikes and my delusions of epic highschool female stories. Enter the immaculate 1983 GL Wagon.

So, two years later I Decided the wagon was too slow and found a 95 impreza 1.8 to trade up to. I get my first loan, my Dad says and I quote: "I knew I should have stayed home with you more," still not letting the truck thing go... 4 days later I am driving on an off camber hill and smash into a pole and am without my new car for 46 days, but who is counting.

Long story short I wanted more power and happened upon this message board. I find this crazy obession with the legacy SS and documentation about swaps was becoming readily available. I happen on a 94 SS 5mt in a junkyard with no hood or front fenders and a large dent in the rear.

BOught SS for $400 and started to gut it immediately. Performed my first swap IN 8 months time, sans wiring. I swapped over everything ss I could engine, tranny, brakes, suspension and with the Help of Rallitek  and dell turned up the boost to 17psi. Drove 2 months blw head gasket. Fixed drove 4 months... Yup boom, actually it just died then wouldn't start.

This time I set goals before I started:

RELIABLE ~250whp
Low end torque
Good handling on pavement but great on gravel and snow
Light weight
To not bug Matt Monson so much that he kills me

Image

I started building the engine which as of now sits at:

Well the compression test showed no compression on cylinders 2 and 4. It "would" start with the accelerator on the floor. When we tore the motor down, about 30% of both those ringlands were not in the pistons...

I didn't pull enough timing and was detonating, though it wasn't audible.

Its not that I don't like them. THey work well, but to match these the spring rate of the gymkhana springs, the AGX's are pretty maxed out as far as damping. Basically, I just want a little stouter strut for piece of mind on dirt and something more matched to my springs.

Been a while since I have updated.

I finished the intake manifold tonight complete with 480CC Yellow injectors and a red turbo inlet. THrottle body issues are all worked out and I have a parallel set of fuel lines.

Still yet to have my heads back. ONe head is completely finished with porting and machining. The other head is being matched to it currently.

Also the car goes in for a Roll cage late december/ January.

Will have more pics soon.

Head are done!!! Back in my possesion, but I had to leave town just as they showed. as soon as I get back lots of pictures.

Didn't have the car caged yet. Caged a different car to run Rally America's open Light this season. will spend the rest of this year sorting out this car

Anyway I will have these heads on the block this weekend. Next weekend it goes together.

The heads look really good. THe white specs all over them are from the parts washer.. think its a little heavy on the detergent side.

Here it is all... well mostly together. I will clearance the valves monday morning. From there I just have to wait on some gaskets before i can drop it in.

I included a picture of the back of my head. remember these started started out as EJ25D NA heads but now with all the functionality of the turbo heads 8)
I am stoked.

OK my biggest pdate welll...to date.

THE ENGINE IS IN THE CAR!!!!!

Seriously after 2 years one month and week and 3 days!!!

But i still am not finished. Saturday morning was spent doing some more wiring. I had an 07 Sti engine harness sitting around so I performed the ignitor delete/ New style coil conversion to my car. I hard wired the the coil connectors from the Sti harness to my engine harness and used 07 Sti Coils.

Image

Kinda ran out of time Saturday, but I also found out that in two years... I lost my starter. Oh and the plug for the pin that holds the clutch fork in a turbo tranny.

Here is the twinscroll goodness installed coated and wrapped

Awesome build. Keep up the good work :). It sounds like you are going to have a real beast once you're done.

FWIW - the plug you lost has P/N 30550-AA000.

I am so frustraded right now. THe engine is in everything is hooked up ready to go!!! I start filling the car with coolant and the coolant banjo is leaking like my great grandmother. I tried a few different banjo bolts and a few different banjo fittings, teflon tape, lots of new brass washers. Still leaks.

I don't know what to do. After 2 years of this my patience is a little less than thin. Any body wanna buy a car? (not seriously. That would be like selling off a misbehaving child)

I was pretty discouraged this morning.

But its more than a coolant leak. I am hoping that head isn't ruined but I won't have access to it again til monday to look.

I am definitely open to suggestions if someone has an idea of something to try... hopefully something while the engine is still in the car.

If it's leaking around the threads, i like to put silicone on them then screw it in. I think this helps give it a little flexibility and a good seal. Your setup sounds a lot like the one i have in my garage except for the turbo. I still have the 50 trim.

Went this morning and cleaned out the threads. Found another new banjo bolt reassembled everything using some good RTV sealant. guess I will wait untill tomorrow to see if it actually worked
