FS: VF30 Turbo - SOLD

Post by wtdash »

Bought this about a month ago, and then decided I wanted a JDM TD05-16G w/the 90° elbow, which I just swapped in.

This turbo came on the JDM V7 Subaru Impreza WRX STi from the late '90's-01.

Turbo has approx. 15K miles and was purchased from NASIOC. It has the VF30/39 wastegate crack, which is a non-issue (search NASIOC), unless you plan on putting this on the mantle vs. the car. ;-)

Ran great. Boosted about 17.5-18+ PSI, which is about 1-2psi above the TD04 w/the Revtronix Stage 2 chip. Boost hit around 3500 RPM w/my 4EAT. The TD04 was closer to 3K and the TD05 is probably 3300 RPM. My Butt Dyno says the VF30 was a bit stronger than the TD05, but I don't have numbers to prove it. The TD05 seems to build earlier w/out the 'hit' of VF30, which might make the VF30 feel stronger????

This turbo was an easy upgrade to the TD04. It uses the same size coolant banjo bolts as the TD04/VF11, so I used the VF11's top pipe back to the Turbo's tank, and the VF30's bottom pipe back to the head - I bent it just a bit to fit. My 90° compressor inlet hose just rubbed the intake manifold, whereas the TD04 had a bit of room. The oil line fit w/very little persuasion.

Here are some specs from NASIOC, etc:
The VF30 features an identical RHF55 housing as used in the larger VF22 which makes upgrades to the wheel increasingly easy. In terms of size, this turbo is almost as large as the VF22, and bigger than the VF23-29. This turbo features the venerable EZ18H turbine housing, 48 mm compressor inlet, and a compressor that while similar in design to the VF23-29, features a 6th blade for better performance across the rev range.....utilizes the exhaust housing of a VF24 and the compressor housing sized between a VF 23 and a VF 22. It comes on boost down low (around the 3000 rpm range).......It is important to note that the VF30 is NOT a roller bearing turbo it is bronze (Thrust?) bearing.
How does this tubo compare to the vf39 (USDM STi 04-06 Turbo)

As far as comparison I've read that the exhaust side of the VF30 is about 2mm larger than the VF39 but the wheel itself is about 1mm smaller than that of the VF39.
Link on NASIOCcomparing to other VF-series, etc.
