The factory service manual recommends only using Subaru coolant because it is specially formulated for aluminum blocks and heads. If you use other coolants not designed for aluminum engines can cause corrosion. Distilled is highly recommended to prevent corrosion. Subaru also recommends using their conditioner in your coolant to prevent leaks.

I was looking up all the fluids because my whole car is dry, except the brakes which needs to be changed and I thought,"While I'm writing all this down I might as well post it up on here and make it easier for people without the FSM's to find."

I don't buy the whole Subaru coolant thing.....you can't tell me a company like Prestone is going to formulate their coolant to not work in aluminum engines......I don't know.....

The guy at the Subaru dealer told me to run 5w-30 in my legacy. Is this alright? I've been running it with 5w-30 for the past few weeks including my autocross and everything seems fine. Should I switch back over to 10w-40?

I wouldn't run 5w30. I ran it in my 90 L wagon though for years with no problems but according to the chart in the book you should run 10w30 or 10w40.
