If your timing belt is off a tooth or or so it'll run, poorly.

Here's something i was curious about. Head Bolt torque specs.... Do we just follow the LGT Specs?

Re: The DOHC installation 'unspoken' details thread
So im doing a 20H head installation on my 22T block. The heads are from a 96 Legacy TT w/ Coil on Plug (I wont be using coil on plug obviously, But all all info is useful i guess) And i was trying to follow the installation process as good as i can. My Issue is the 20H coolant crossover pipe wont go on. The breather in the middle of the block is stopping it from going on. I am going to do the Under the manifold intake so i am stuck at the moment. Here are some pics.
Any and all Comments and suggestions would be helpful. I read somewhere on here that it's possible to block off the breather, but i don't necessarily want to. i guess if i have to i will but what should i do about removing the breather and plugging the hole? i do NOT want to tap it because then there will obviously be aluminum shavings in the block. Maybe some JB Weld?

How much clearance do you need to get the crossover to fit? Are we talking 1/8" or more like something around 1/4" or more?

So, following up on cj91's situation, I can run the EJ22T coolant crossover pipe with DOHC? There is no need to get a DOHC crossover pipe?

From my experience you can run the EJ22T crossover, but some of the electrical connectors come really close to hitting parts of the manifold/PCV lines, making them hard to plug in.

So if I can get a DOHC crossover pipe for cheap from a junkyard, I should do that or just try my EJ22T crossover? After going through the thread again, I realized that the EJ25D(junkyard) crossover pipe wouldn't be a good idea since I plan on using the EJ22T intake manifold. I guess I will stick with the EJ22T stuff.

I also had to modify my fuel lines, well not modify but bend them alittle, Also since i had to mess with my fuel lines, i remove all the steel lines attached to the fuel lines for the Charcoal canister. i don't use the canister but if i do i'll probably mount it somewhere under the brake booster so it's out of sight. i think it looks ugly where it sits.

I know we still don't have confirmation on this, but if I can pull the coolant pipes off of this EJ25 in the junkyard, is it worthwhile to see if they would work? Does anyone know if they would work on the combo of an EJ22T shortblock/EJ20G heads?

Re: The DOHC installation 'unspoken' details thread
Judging from pics, not personal experience, it looks like the EJ25D has a crossover pipe very close to the EJ22T/EJ20G in shape. The only real difference between the EJ20G and EJ22T is the sensors are on the other side.
Also, the crossover pipe doesn't reach the heads, so any of them will "work" with any heads. It's all about the interfearance with the intake manifolds and related pipe/lines/hoses.

Re: The DOHC installation 'unspoken' details thread
Thank you PhyrraM, I was thinking though that I will just use my EJ22T crossover pipe. What I guess I was thinking about were the actual coolant piping for the block, not the crossover pipe. I definitely need different coolant pipes for the DOHC so I was curious if some from an EJ25 would work?

Re: The DOHC installation 'unspoken' details thread
I haven't had a chance to play with different coolant pipes.
EJ25Ds are not turbo-charged so the "second" pipe will not exsist, however there is a chance you can use the EJ22T "second" pipe. You can likely use the EJ25D "first" coolant pipe because that really only goes to the heater with a small nipple that goes to the AIC and throttlebody.
"First" and "second" refer to the two pipes that come from the water pump and wrap up over the base of the heads. Only turbo cars have a "second" pipe, it runs to the expansion tank or the turbo itself.

Re: The DOHC installation 'unspoken' details thread
yeah i wasn't focusing on those, i was focusing on the smaller nipples that go to the IAC and TB... i wanted to know which was supply and return but i think i figured it out... someone can still tell me which one is which just so i can assure myself.

Re:
If this is my problem i am having, i would like to download those 2 articles, but i cannot get access to those files (403 Forbidden) anybody have them?ciper wrote:I'm lazy and didn't read the entire thread BUT I want to point out that there is a difference in cam sensor "heights"
I tried to use a 91 EJ22NA cam sensor on EJ25D heads and alhough the car ran I found out the sensor was actually hitting the timing marks! My sensor somehow didnt break though it has some nice scrapes across it. A thin washer between the sensor and the cam journal mounting solved this.
I also want to say YOU HAVE TO COUNT BELT TEETH. There is no other way to correctly install a belt, especially on hybrid engines. Remember you are probably using a different thickness of headgasket than was originally used so the marks will not be accurate. Decking the heads adds another change into the mix.
Even the belt markings may not be right (yes I have seen it). I suggest counting the teeth with the belt in your lap and mark it with a pen or white out ahead of time. This helps alot when using an old belt.
Page 15 of this document http://endwrench.com/images/pdfs/TBeltEWWin05.pdf saysNote: Here’s a great check — there should be exactly 44 teeth between the mark on
the crank sprocket and the one on the passenger’s side cam pulley, and 40.5 teeth
between the crank mark and the driver’s side cam mark.
For the DOHC 2.5na engine check page 18 of http://endwrench.com/images/pdfs/2.5Timing.pdf
By far the most accurate method of determining proper belt alignment is to
count the belt teeth. This diagram illustrates the tooth counts for all five timing
marks. Tooth count Z1 is 54.5 teeth. This measures from the crankshaft pulley
timing mark to the right (upper) intake camshaft sprocket timing mark. Tooth
count Z2 is 51 teeth. This measures from the crankshaft pulley timing mark to
the left (upper) intake camshaft sprocket timing mark. Tooth count Z3 is 28 teeth.
This is the number of teeth between the (upper) intake and (lower) exhaust
camshaft sprocket timing marks. The Z3 tooth count is the same for both the left
and right sides of the engine because the same relationship must be maintained
between the upper and lower cams on both sides of the engine.
To help eliminate confusion realize one tooth count is using valleys on the belt (teeth on the pulley) while the other side uses teeth on the belt (valleys on the pulley). This confused the heck out of me at first.
I'd be willing to bet many of you who used the timing marks on the pulleys or covers are off by one tooth on both drivers side cam pulleys!
Or should i just move my cam pulleys In or Out 1 tooth?
Also are the 20H cam gears dofferent than the 20G? i heard from someone local and read a few things saying they could possibly be different, the pickups for the cam sensor in different locations, which could also result in my car not starting. anybody know

Re: The DOHC installation 'unspoken' details thread
Shouldn't be any different. I don't see why they would. Everyone runs DOHC swaps on their SOHC motors and they run every kind of DOHC head including EJ20H,G,K and EJ25D and probably more. I think you've either got a timing problem unrelated to the cam gear being different or something else. You say there's weak spark? Did you swap the igniter or coil?

Yeah, swapped ignitor, coil pack, ignition, ignition relay, replaced broken cam sensor, found out the back of my cam gear was all messed up from my mistake so i went and spoke with jake about it and we came up with trying another cam gear (a black one) and still nothing. im charging my battery now... hopefully the ecu will reset while the batt is disconnected.
