Finishing my engine build, and of course there are some last minute things to add to the list of new parts like a new set of wires and sparkplugs.
I think it'd be a good idea to change the coil pack since it's probably the original. I've read hear and on Nasioc (by some of you years ago!!!) that a Diamond coil pack is an up grade, but having trouble putting my finger on where to find exactly what I need.
So far the info I have gathered:
-90-94 turbos, Manual tranny got the Diamond, Auto got a hatachi
-95 on to ?? got the diamond, others, Impreza, what years??
What does 4 pin mean?
What models and years exactly had the compatible coil pack?
Does it make sense to replace my coil pack with a more recent diamond coil pack?? I have a tendancy to just buy new and forget about it, how much are they new??
Hopefully this will be a good simple thread for people like me looking for all the facts in one place. Thanks!!!

Turbo models didn't get the Diamond pack. I think only 90-91 manual non-turbo models did.
4-pin coil packs have built-in ignitors and won't interchange with yours.
Second-generation Legacies all had Diamond packs, although at some point along the line they switched to that 4-pin design. I think the year of the change was different depending on the engine.
The details don't matter, though; just look at the coil pack. If its connector has 3 pins and the label on top says Diamond, it's the one you want.
They're expensive new.

Some Imprezas came with the Diamond coil packs, as the Wife's '96 2.2l OBS came with one.
I also pulled a couple of these off pre-facelift Imprezas @ my U-pull-it.
I think these were about $15 there.
BC N/A Legacys have the Diamond label facing the firewall for some reason so you have to stick your head under the hood & look.
Imprezas have the label facing the radiator so you can spot those a mile away.

Re: Diamond Coil Pack -need some concrete info-
My 1993 AWD 5MT N/A Wagon has a Diamond pack on it.
I have absolutely no reason to believe either of the previous owners had the coil pack replaced.
Is this an anomaly? Or is it more likely the pack was replaced at some point and this is what the dealer provided?

All manual trannies got the Diamond coil. I have yet to see a manual-equipped Legacy without a Diamond coil.Crashsector wrote:My 1993 AWD 5MT N/A Wagon has a Diamond pack on it.
