New to the forum: 92 Legacy wagon awd

Post by tom4pope »

Hello all!
I am brand new to the forum and to the subaru game. Today i purchase a 1992 Legacy Wagon AWD, which i am extremely pleased with. My plan thus far is to get some nice wheels and tires and suspension on there, and take care of cosmetics, as i believe this car is mechanically very sound. i have already been doing a bit of research and realize turbo or supercharging the current engine wont get me real power. I am wondering if i was to do an engine swap down the line, what engine would be best if i want 200+ hp and to keep the awd?
Thanks in advance

If you want over 200 hp the best thing to look into is a half cut from japan. Full motor, drivetrain, dash, ecu, and all the wiring. If you don't want to swap motors the next best thing is to get some ej25d heads and swap those onto the ej22 block, the stock block can stand boost and, unless you want 400+ hp, it will be fine as long as you get it tuned. Heres a D.I.Y on turboing you're car, its on a '97 Outback though but if you use the heads from one everything else will be pretty much the same. http://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=22065

Welcome to the BBS.

If you're wanting 200 hp or about that....I'd suggest swapping in a turbo motor. Probably the easiest and best option from a future modification stand point is to get an overseas EJ20G motor, and ECU. There a board member that has a reflash for that ECU that is capable of a bit more power than the stock setup. Here's some info on the Robtune.

If you swap heads, the compression will be lower so being n/a it will be a big power loss. The head swap is to lower the compression to add a turbo, and the 2.5 heads flow better too.

Or to be a little off the norm you could swap an EG33 6 cylinder out of a SVX...

I think im gonna stick with the EJ, go for the 2.5 heads and turbo... Its gonna take a while to figure out all the parts i will need. Anyone have any pointers on where i can start learning about doing a build like this?
This is probably a year away but i want to know what im doing.
On a better note i think i may be getting the legacy repainted early next week.... Satin blk :-)

Start by going through the Engine and Turbo sections here on the BBS and pay attention to the stickies. There is A LOT of really good info all piled up on here, which makes me hope that there is a backup being made lol!
