Some newbie type questions

Post by S Webster »

HI Folks. Say, I've been low on payin' work lately, so I've had some time to spend on my recently aquirred 93 SS turbo. I'm plannin' to start a build thread soon, but in the short term, have some minor problems. I drove it into Santa Fe yesterday,(first time very far from the shop) & it runs & drives fine, just a great little car.

Problem 1. Dies at stops, if I nurse it till things settle down it idles well, idle is low, 6-800 rpms,(part of the problem I suspect). But decelerating to a stop, it dies when the throttle plate snaps shut.

2. Looking for a good source for oil pres. gauge sender, not much room under the Alt.

3. I'm fabing up a new exhaust system, starting with a TDO4, 3" bell mouth DP, no cats, 2.5" back to a STI muff. I have a couple of plastic tanked rex TMICs, & with all the replumbing, can I do away with the intake resonator box?

4. A minor problem in our dry climate, but annoying never the less. The sun roof leaks rite on my head. Checked the drain tubes & they seem clear, seals look good. ?

Lastly, curious why the JECS green MAFS is favored? A friend who has a Subie shop in Santa Fe says they have more problems with those than others. Thanks in advance for your help guys, S.

1. IAC might need cleaning/adjustment. TPS could be misadjusted, or worse someone played around with the various adjustment screws w/o following the FSM procedures. Full FSM is in the stuff you need to know forum...

3. Yes.
4. There is a sunroof repair thread in the Body, Chassis and Interior forum. Basically, you'll have to take down the headliner to access the sunroof asssembly. then reseal it. simple, but time consuming.
5. Stock MAF limit is around 160 g/s, JECS MAF limit is around 215 g/s. You must have a chip/EM to use it though.

For problem 1 I'd suggest checking for vacuum leaks.

For item 2, you're best bet is under the alternator. Another option would be to get a block adapter for one of the other oil gallery plugs. Check out this post for a link to the adapater I used.
