clutch question

Post by Flatfourced »

So i have a friend with a 90 legacy 2.2, manual trans.

He has some non textbook clutch problems. I would like to get some comfirmation on my theory before we spend money on a clutch kit.

Here's the symptoms
1- With the car off you can switch into any gear. no problem
2- With it in 1st gear or reverse, car off, clutch pressed. You can start it and clutch operates normal but will not change gears.
3- With it idleing in neutral it will not go into any gear, just grinds like the clutch is not pressed.
4- we have adjusted in both directions, no good. and the cable is in good condition.

So, here is my theory.

It's the pressure plate, or fork.

Thanks for any help.

I would likely suspect one of the clutch fork clips have slipped off and is not giving you enough clutch travel to fully disengage the transmission.

Either way, you're going to have to split the motor & trans. Is the current clutch still good?

From what i kow it seems the disk is in working condition, just staying engaged.

the car belongs to the guy that gave me the super deal on the legy ss that i'm pulling my ej22t from. This is from his description of the symptoms and i really want to help him out.

Thats a great suggestion 777, i have only done 1 suby clutch job and it was just a disk on an EA71. Any chance at a part number on the clips? Do they break or just slip off? if they break I will add them to the parts i take for the job.

Thanks again

You can see a picture of the clips in the non-turbo clutch setup from this 05 scan

http://www.main.experiencetherave.com/s ... h_Info.pdf

As for the part #, the throw out bearing clips are 30539AA000. There is also one for the clutch fork, if needed, it's 30534AA001.

This thread has some of those part #'s. You can also d/l the parts book from me, which will have all the part #'s
