Direct fit AWIC kits on the way.

Post by Turbo_Carl »

I happen to live a stones throw away from one of the largest Intercooler suppliers in the country.

http://www.siliconeintakes.com/

As soon as next week I am going to spend all day developing a direct fit Air to Water Intercooler kit for these cars. With a front mount kit possible in the future. (Although that might be a bit more difficult without modification / relocation) Air to water is going to be for sure though.

More details and pictures as soon as I get started!

This is going to use a high quality pump that runs constant when the car is on?

Having made an AWIC fit the stock Legacy I can say there's a bit more details than the standard TMIC or even FMIC. If you can provide details on what you plan to do, that'd be great.

Yes I am going to have one fit my car so.

#1 it's going to fit the stock vf11
#2 it's going to have a high quality Bosch Cobra Pump
#3 it's going to have a high quality heat exchanger with a fan
#4 it's going to have a intercooler shape that fits and that is mounted
#5 it's going to have minimal piping and water line interference

Like I said, I have access to literally hundreds of pipes/couplers/intercooler sizes etc. The people that work there are all really cool and it shouldn't take long to figure out. I am serious about getting this done. Next weekend is my target time to go work on it.

Once you've ironed out this setup will you be selling it on the forum or just building it for yourself? Any idea on costs? What does that pump cost to begin with? Also, will you be including a reservoir like this person has done?

My target cost is $400 for everything.

I believe the pump is about $100. There is a cheaper pump, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I'm not sure a reservoir is needed on such a stock setup. While it will help with cooling, that VF11 isn't going to be really creating too much heat at 14 psi to 17 psi... compared to say a Holset / Garrett / Bigger IHI etc... More to come on that though.

I am not really out to make money off this. I will let everyone know every detail of installation, and what parts they need to order from Silicone Intakes. That way, there is no middle man and everyone saves money.

Good idea! I will do that! Should be no problem with all the coupler options I have.

Actually the vf11 and other smaller turbos will likely heat up the air more than a larger turbo. Larger turbos are typically more efficient at higher pressures & flows, and as such will not input as much heat compressing the air as a smaller turbo designed for lower boost pressures.

You should be fine without a resevoir as long as your exchangers have adequate capacity and your pump flows enough.

I didn't know that! I stand corrected. Most of the research I was doing on PSI / Temps was in really high horsepower 2.3T Applications (reaching 25-35 PSI) Something my Subaru will probably never see. It makes sense now that a smaller turbo trying to reach 14 PSI will create more heat than a bigger turbo at the same PSI. You learn something new every day!

I will probably end up getting a 1 Gallon Fuel cell and mount it up front somewhere. If I can get it cheap. Otherwise, forget it.

Another note about the Bosche Cobra. It was specifically designed by Ford and Bosche for high horsepower Air to Water applications. (Ford GT etc...) I have no concerns with it's capabilities.

Anyone know of a good reliable constant 12 Volt source to hook it up to?

This is the intercooler kit I plan on using.

http://www.siliconeintakes.com/product_ ... fd7ac15bcb

with a few changes

Upgrading to this pump

http://www.siliconeintakes.com/product_ ... fd7ac15bcb

Using this Intercooler as the width looks about right. How wide are the JDM Subaru Intercoolers?

http://www.siliconeintakes.com/product_ ... fd7ac15bcb

Using this bend on the intercooler inlet

http://www.siliconeintakes.com/product_ ... fd7ac15bcb

Using this reducer to the turbo outlet

http://www.siliconeintakes.com/product_ ... 248cdb83cb

Might test out this pipe from the turbo outlet to the intercooler inlet

http://www.siliconeintakes.com/product_ ... 30fdee8b36

Everything else will be included with the kit. (Fittings, Water Line etc...)

I have my own attack plan for the mounting system. I will leave that a secret until I actually do it.

I CAN'T WAIT! :)

The only problem with that one would be 3 mounting holes. I think 4 would be more stable for our application.

*edit*

On second thought, that might be a good option. I will try both out and see how they fit up! It might be better to sacrifice a mounting hole for the better stability of a 90 degree bend vs a 180 degree bend. I will have to find a piece of steel to use to mount it.

No prob!

Thanks for the suggestion.

*Update*

I had some time to stop by today after work and took a look at the Type 16. It's a no go. It would potentially fit, but I would have to remove my strut tower brace. Since most people do that upgrade, I want something a little more friendly. Installation might involve taking off the brace, installing the intercooler, and then replacing the brace on top.

Image
Image

That leaves me with the Type 13 which should actually work.

If not, one of the barrel style types will work if I mount it against the fire wall. They should actually fit with room to spare! I was even considering mounting it under the brace and using that as an intercooler brace too. However, that would not be stock. I am not the least bit concerned about this bump in the road. I have many options.

More pictures to follow in a few days.

I'm glad you're a go getter. Most people say they're gonna do something like this and flake out halfway through. I've been strongly considering an awic setup late too so this is cool.

I got your back. ;)

Trust me... after owning 4 cars with little to no aftermarket support, I've realized I have to just bite the bullet and do stuff myself.

This car is no different.

If I was you, I would get your hands on a JDM Subaru AWIC. That way you have something to use to measure from.
I have one and the clearance is very tight.
Short of that part, I picked up the bosch pump, a 24x12x1 radiator from frozen boost.

I don't have a auxillary tank. The water is pumped from the bottom of the radiator to the top of the exchanger. The rest flows naturally.

It pretty much stays completely cool most of the time.
But if i did it again, I would change out for the 26x7x2 radiator.
Yes I have too many Subarus
