rallyak car's and journeys

Post by rallyak »

I'm going to introduce my self i'm Charles and live in Anchorage Alaska and own a delivery company. I currently have two first gen and one second gen legacys. I love these older subies they are easy to work on and cheep to maintain and you can drive them forever.

Some of you have seen my wife's car from a repair I had posted and she had left for the day(over 24 hours) so I'm going to tear it apart and put it back together before she get back. The list of things af things I'm going to attempt are;

new clutch
bushing in rear lateral bars
rear sway
rack bushings (whiteline)
shifter bushings
change the oil

and on my car;
fluid change in transmittion (redline)
Image
I have outher things to on both cars but I beleve this list will be tall task in it self.
Heres some picks of the rides.

Matt Monson had an identical 1st gen "outback" (also a touring wagon) that he posted on here years ago. Wonder if it's the same car?

Here's the thread, but the pic is long gone.

thanks guys, but I painted that way. I was tired of the plain jane look like every outher white wagon. The first time I painted that way was 9 years ago and I recently just repainted it ( two year resurrection) I wished I posted all my progress because I have done lots of rust repair and preventive steps keep the rust from comming back. I really love my car and I should have taken it to the scrap yard but me and my mom kind of have a competition to see who can make it to 1,000,000 miles on there car first ( I'm losing with 475,516 ) because of it being off the road for two years.

As for the progress the outher day, I didnt get every thine done, I was called to go to work and to drive to Seward but heres the good bad and the ugly that I replaced.
Image
The flywheel looked really good no bad hot spots, you could still see the factory machining in the surface area. Normally I resurface or replace it but I took 80 grit sand paper an took the glaze off and put it back in.
Image
rebuilt clutch disk with kevlar With a 2.5 pressure plate (that was the good)
Image
The soft bushing and mount is the bad.
Image
The rack bushing get the ugly award.

I was going to replace the shifter link bushings, lateral bar bushing but had to get it ready for work Plus, I didn't get all of them in the mail so those things are on hold for now. Now I'm going to change transmittion oil in mine , Rebulit 5 spd wants to grind in 2nd when hot, I hope the redline 75w90ns will fix that.

Hey guys, work has had me busy driving all over the state and very long hours. The last week I've had a sticky front caliper and my mpg has dropped because of it. So to day I had time to change it and fix the body ground on my wife's car.
Image
I even put some high performance paint on for better braking (If only that was true) well at least thay look good, for this week.

It's finally summer, but now my wife wants her a/c fixed. I belive every thing works in it, just low on gas (R12), my car is full but it cut off after running for about 5 to 10 min. After that the clutch will cycle off and on not long enought to keep the air cold. I'm not sure if I have a restriction or a bad hi/lo switch. In alaska you don't really need A/C for going to the store, but when your in the car 20 hours a day and the sun bearly sets and then it rises again it would be nice, if nothing to help stay awake.
Well last night I had a delivery to Seward again, but this one was going on the cruise ship.

Been some time since I updated last but finelly replaced bushings in my wife's car, it was as painfull as I rembered. I hope it will fix the tire issue i've been having with the inside of the rear tire wearing too quickly. But before I get it realined I think I should changed the struts, they are about a year and half old with a little over 100,000 miles on them, they still feel good but for how long? Also have a stock 19mm swaybar on (off an ls air ride car) and I know that will feel much better when loaded (500 to 700lbs) going around corners in the mountains. I also swapped out the axles with some lower mileage ones that dosen't have any play on the outer cv and not stiff,I'm hopeing the small vibration in the rear will be fixed.

I'm running out of time, and need to get it back on the road for now, struts will have to wait tell next days off. I hope the tires don't chew up in the next three days (about 2000 miles)it's been a crazy busy summer.

heres a few picks two days before summer solstice at 3:00am.

Damn dude

Yeah I think my personal best is around that too (around 1,200 miles or so). I left Wisconson around 6-7 in the morning and made it just outside of Billings, MT around midnight or so. That was a long day!

Winter is coming and my wife's 5mt is making a lot of bearing noises( input shaft). I pulled it out to get freshened up and found the rear tail housing bushing was badly worn and chewed the splined yoke that slides into the housing. Took the driveline in to my local driveline shop to see if they could change the yoke and they could if they could get the part but it has been discontinued. I went hunting for a driveline and found a good one now waiting for the Transmission and snow is coming soon and I'm working out side.

I picked up the transmittion and installed it yesterday, the weather finely cleared up from raining almost nonstop for two weeks. We had bad flooding south of Anchorage like Seward, and now need to do more maintance before winter. My wife had a delivery there and the road was closed to cars but she drove her truck so they let her throught, now both diffs are full af water. I did'nt make any money on that delivery.

Back to the subaru, I needed to put a sleeve on where the throw out bearing slides, it was very worn. The clutch shop told me now I will need a special throw out bearing that he can't get without buying the the whole repair kit. Which is the sleeve and a over sized bearing. I studied it and noticed that all I need to do next time is to machine or hone the new bearing to fit the sleeve. The repair kit was close to 90$ and it wasn't anything specal, Any one with a small lathe could make one. After install I noticed the cluth fork had hardly no slop and felt alot smoother when driving. Here's some picks of what i'm talking about.

Yeah, that's a tranquil kit. You think about it....90 bucks is better than a new trans due to a worn trans snout.

It seems like a good idea if the syncros and bearings are in otherwise good shape.

All bearings and syncros changed, shifts perfect. As long as I don't drive it much it should stay good for another 200,000. I wish the bearings would last longer, that seam to be when I start getting some bearing noise.
