Sound system interference?

Post by alexandermf »

Sooo I have two problems with my sound system install. I've installed plenty of subs and amps and decks in my cars and friends cars and everything has always went fine.

Well when I installed my sub and amp last week I might have overlooked a few things being in a rush.

Problem 1: when turning the car to the on position before I crank I get two slight jumangi thumps from the sub with about a second or two in between. Then also when I crank it on it will do one to two thuds. And when I mean slight literally if you picture the jumangi beat when its in the ground :P sounds to me like a test from the amp to the sub but I know it shouldn't do that.

Solution 1: me being in the rush I ran the power cable, rca cables and the lil blue p.conn wire all through the same side of my car.... I didnt think much of it until I tucked/taped all the wires together and realized I usually run the rca cables and other lil blue wire on the passenger side.. are these wires all ran/bundled together causing that weird thump OR...

Problem 2: this happened last night after NOT starting the car all day(I usually start my car up everyday by 10am for errands/work/etc, well last night it was completely dead and in the on position without cranking the light thump was going ape shit like I had the jumangi game in my trunk! I ended up jumping it and it fired right up. My guess is I may have wired the lil blue wire to the wrong blue wire behind my deck. I just connected it to a blue wire that I thought I had cut before from my last system but then I was reading through the install instructions where it says I should connect the pconn wire to my power antenna wire(which is blue as well and I cut along time ago when I bought the car) so the blue power antenna wire IS NOT connected to anything and I have the blue pconn wired to a rando. The whole system works and hits fine but I'm thinking since I let the car sit all day the amp drained the battery

Problem 3: the green power light on my amp is ALWAYS on since its getting direct power from my yellow top...this also confused me cuz shouldn't it shut off when the car does??

Is me not having the blue wire connected to the proper power antenna wire causing the amp to always stay on? Is the job of the blue wire to tell the amp to power down when I turn the car off like the power antenna would if it were hooked up?

I'm pretty sure the thud is from the interference of the wires being ran together and the draining of the battery + amp always being on (even when car is off) is from me not connecting the blue wire to the blue power antenna wire behind the deck...

Guess all I need to do is take the time when Im off and connect that blue wire differently to see if it changes the amp powering on/off

It is good practice to separate the RCA's from the power leads, however as long as the wiring has been done properly you're more likely to just get a little noise vs. the turn on thump.

You definitely have the amp turn on lead wired incorrectly. Start by fixing that and see if that fixes your problem. If not, then try separating the RCA's & power (I don't think it will make much of a difference). Where did you ground the amp and how long is the ground lead?

Also, regarding the amp turn on lead. Some head units have two leads, one for an amp turn on and one for the power antenna. If your head unit has two leads, make sure to hook up the amp turn on lead to the correct amp turn on lead. On my Alpine, when you are using anything but the radio it will de-energize the power antenna lead so the antenna goes down. If you only have one lead for amp turn on & power antenna then it doesn't matter.

I texted ya for quicker communication :) thanks for quick reply

Switched the blue wires and still no fix for the amp constantly staying on, it was dead again this morning. Took out power cable to amp for now so my car doesn't die on me

If you pull the blue wire completely from the amp does it still stay on? If so, I think you've got issues with the amp.

Here's the manual for the head unit, which has the wiring diagram on page 42.

Figured I'd follow up..

Sent the bad amp back and got a brand new one shipped right out to me, fired up perfectly and not staying on when I turn car off! Also no more jumangi thump even though I still have all my amp wires running along driver door soooo both issues was the bad amp
