Turbo chimney smoking :/

Post by free5ty1e »

Ah, crap. Finally got the front end of my car all nice and sealed up and cleaned and dried (timing belt / cam / crank seals / water pump / oil pump / valve cover gaskets), and this morning I notice smoke rising from what appears to be my turbo chimney area. I rebuilt my VC32/VF11 hybrid turbo as I created the hybrid with an appropriate IHI rebuild kit, and I suppose that was a good 60,000 km and 8 years ago.

I guess I'll be disassembling things to get under the chimney this weekend and see if I can figure out where oil may be leaking.

I still probably have to get behind the engine and replace the rear main seal and plastic oil blockoff plate.... but I'm curious, would oil leaks from that area possibly be able to smoke up through the turbo chimney or is that typically a pretty clear indication that the turbo has blown a seal or something...?

It could be the turbo, but also the plate on the back of the passenger side head.

Never noticed or knew about that possible leak location; I'll have to get in there and see for myself. Maybe I can find a photo on here somewhere so I know what I'm looking for - I'll do some searching. Thanks!

Here's the plate cj is talking about.

Look at it and the turbo. I would lean more towards the turbo.

The separator plate & rear main would probably not cause smoking through the chimney.

Ah -- gotcha, thanks Josh. I still suspect the turbo as well; I suppose that's the catalyst I'd need to force me to start my VF36 install, lol

I gotta pull that thing out of the box and check to make sure it's still good. I hope I don't need a rebuild kit for the VF36; at least, I hope the titanium compressor wheel is still OK.
