Mister Anderson's 93 TW track car project

Post by Mister Anderson »

The time has come to start the build thread that I had been planing for a while.

Budget: What's a budget?

UPDATE 01/03/2014

Here is the new build list:

ENGINE
-2011 EJ257 crank
-BC sportsmans rods
-Wiseco pistons
-ACL main/rod bearings
-ARP head studs
-Subaru master overhaul gasket set
-2011 STI oil pump
-2007 STI oil pan
-Tomei timing belt guide
-Perrin LW crank pulley
-Killer B Motorsport Oil Baffle
-Killer B Motorsport Oil Pickup
-Gates racing timing belt kit
-Subaru OEM Super Three Bond
-Machine work
-HalTech E8 standalone

HEADS
I decided to get a set of 98 EJ25D heads that have the clover shaped chambers. I decided against using the gen 1 EJ20G heads since there is no camshaft options available besides having them reground at Delta.

-Supertech SS intake valves
-Supertech inconel exhaust valves
-Supertech dual valve spring kit w/titanium retainers
-Supertech valve guides
-Supertech valve stem seals
-Keldford 278 version 4 camshafts. These have been special ordered, and won't arrive for 4-7 weeks.
-Intake manifold; Version 1/2 20G

TRANSMISSION

-Version 4 STi-RA 5 speed w/DCCD and a standalone controller
-ACT ProLite Flywheel
-ACT HD clutch
-GoodRidge stainless clutch line
-Kartboy short throw shifter
-Kartboy shifter bushings
-Kartboy aluminum shift knob

EXHAUST

-Tomei equal length exhaust manifold w/up pipe
-Invidia V2 downpipe bellmouth
-3 inch stainless Tomioka Racing w/resonator

TURBO/FUEL

-Blouch 18G
-Injector Dynamics fuel injectors 1000cc
-Walbro fuel pump $100
-AEM Tru-Boost gauge $250
-Subaru AWIC

NEED TO GET

-AFR gauge, EX temp gauge, and whatever else that will come up

UPDATE 01/10/2014

I got around to snapping a few pics of some of the stuff. I have it spread out between two houses so this isn't everything.

I Started the port work on the new heads. This is no where near finished. I had spent a lot of time porting the Liberty EJ20G heads so I'm a little burned out on port work lol.

Image

Image

I'm going to try to get this done by the end of the weekend so I can take them to the machine shop the following week. Hopefully the Kelford camshafts won't take a month to show up.

UPDATE 01/26/2014

I am finally heading to the machine shop tomorrow!

Image

I picked up a set of 17in BBS wheels

Image

I drove to Seattle yesterday and came home with a V.4 STI-RA 5 speed w/ R180 mechanical LSD rear end. It has the DCCD center differential. I plan on running a standalone controller for it.

Also picked up a STI pedal assm

wow nice start! Good move on the engine management, all the best parts in the world are useless without it! You are probably going to want to get and clutch with more holding power after the 16g goes on. actually, a stronger trans might be a good idea too.... Once you build the motor and put those heads on, you should be able to make ~300whp

The WRX 20G cams will fit into the Legacy 20G heads, but the WRX cams have a different lobe profile for the buckets vs the legacy's stub rocker. There are a few more issues with the Legacy 20G heads. No one makes off the shelf valves/springs. They are totally different dimensions than any other Subaru valve. Also, the combustion chambers are 57cc and this can lead to compression issues. I had another set of Wiseco pistons machined down to fix this issue (75mm pistons machined down to use on a 79mm crank). The crowns are on the bottom tolerance range and was afraid of melting one with high power levels.

You've got some sweet parts going into this build, I'm jealous. Those of the photos of all the parts laid out on the table, that's the stuff dreams are made of. Looking forward to seeing more of your progress on this build.

How's the build going? This looks strangely similar to the build in my 91. Camshafts, ecu, 5spd, 2.2 are the main differences. I'm only running 16psi and still hitting 275whp. So I expect you to hit some sweet power.

Really want to see how you like the ecu though as I want to convert to a standalone down the line.

update

Been a long time since I have done an update on this project. Well I am returning the sedan back to stock since I have bought a 1993 turbo wagon. I got a call from the previous owner asking if I was interested. I paid a grand for the car, and has around 265k miles on it. The only catch was the car didn't have reverse.

The day I bought it:

Image

The engine that I was building for the sedan went into the wagon;

Image

Image

Here are some pictures of the engine, transmission, and the rear-end.

I plan on running the turbo inlet under the intake after I break the engine in.

Image

Image

Image

Checking the piston to valve clearance.

Image

Image

Kelford cams.

Image

Stock EJ25D cams vs Kelford 272.

Image

I had to do some machining so the new cams would clear the inside of the heads.

Image

Image

The valve seat pressure was around 100 pounds so I ended up shaving a few millimeters off the spring seat washers to lower it.

Image

Image

Image

I bought a special spring compressor for Subaru DOHC heads.

Image

Image

I went ahead and lapped each valve to it's corresponding location, even though the machine shop did a valve job.

Image

Image

Image

I tore the RA transmission down for inspection, and resealing.

Image

Image

The R180 had some pitting on the outer races of carrier bearings, so I ended up replacing all the bearings. I used all Subaru OEM bearings.

getting ready to push the pinion shaft races out of the housing.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

R160 vs. the R180.

Image

I bought a set of SuberDave's custom CV races. I also bought brand new STi inner CV joints from the dealer.

Image

Image

New exhaust vs stock legacy.

Image

Image

Image

Intercooler

Image

Picked up some 114.7x8.5 STi rims. I bought Project Kics wheel adapters.

Image

Installed the DCCD switch in the dash.

Image

The controller is mounted under the center console. I built a plug and play harness with the STi-RA body harness I have.

Anyway, that's where I am at now.

Thanks everyone for the input!!

I have few videos of the car now that it is running. First start up was flawless, no problems. The car still has the stock VF11 turbo running at waste gate pressure.

Still drives the same with the speedo hooked up. I still need to get the HalTech in, and tuned. hopefully the tune will help with that idle lol. I might remove the LW crank pulley, and re-install the stock one. The engine is super easy to kill with that LW pulley, and the 9 pound flywheel. This car is a play car, so I might leave it alone. Unfortunately, I won't be working on this project again until the end of March.

As for my 91 SS that's going to be put back together this coming summer. I have the interior out, and the engine/trans out. It will remain as a stock daily driver.
