Upper coolant reservoir compatibility?

Post by Apex3 »

A hose just snapped off the reservoir(the metal, or at least metal-looking, one), now I need a need a new one and fast. Anyone know what all is a direct swap for a 91 turbo? Since I assume they will not have the right one in stock at Subaru.

Or if you have one sitting around that would be awesome too.

There are no other Subarus that interchange directly.

IIRC, there have been a few folks to have swapped to a USDM WRX one. Maybe a search on this forum will bring it up.

You need a new hose or a new tank? I have a stock reservoir if you need it.

Both actually but the hose I can get from subaru, don't imagine it being too expensive. Let me see what subaru wants for the tank first though, since I could get it quicker that way I assume, being that you're in Portland.

Nice appropriate sig you've got there, haha. Thanks guys, looks like the wrx one is easy enough to swap in, just need a longer hose.

Just go to napa and get some heater hose. Worked for me every time. Subaru will probably want a lot more than just a few feet of hose from napa. If you want the tank, i'll ship it to you for $20, I replaced one nipple with a brass one and epoxied the shit out of it so it wouldn't break again. Lol

Any of the turbo Subaru tanks will work with re-runnig hose and jerry-rigging a way to secure it. When mine broke I had a JDM WRX metal one zip-tied where the old on was, using a couple brass hose couplers and heater hose so everything fit from the new angles. Worked flawlessly. They all have the same ports just at different angles depending on year.

Just an FYI if the replacement stock one breaks on you down the road again.

Hi Everyone,
Sorry if I'm using bad threadjacking manners, no slight intended to Apex3.

I have the exact same problem! 94 turbowagon, I snapped one of the barbs off the tank. Specifically the one on the back, there's 3 from top to bottom and I broke the middle one.

I epoxied it, it ran about 50 miles and started spraying out around the epoxy. Repeat, repeat, I've put about 1.5 sticks of epoxy on at least 10 times and can't get it to stop. :(

So, Thanks for the great advice on the WRX tank. Unfortunately WRX's don't show up at my pick-a-part place often, so are there any tanks that specifically won't work, or any of them that have the radiator cap on them will be compatible after mounting and figuring out how to hose it up?

Anyone have one of these tanks *that doesn't leak* and wanna sell it to me? :)

Here's what mine looks like (image borrowed from another post on this site).

They can be found cheap on eBay for dirt cheap. WRXs don't show up in yards much in general, they get bought up by companies who makes a business of parting out WRXs and STIs (often on eBay).

As for what won't work, anything from a turbo EJ series engine should work fine.
